Anthropic’s Hiring Tests Read Like Therapy, With Compensation Reaching Rp13 Billion

Anthropic’s hiring process has become a talking point across the AI industry for a reason. Candidates are not only judged on technical skill, but also on how they think, how they handle ethics, and whether they are willing to disagree with the company when they believe it matters.

That unusual approach is matched by unusually large pay packages. Bloomberg reported that compensation can exceed $250,000, while some senior roles reach as high as $850,000, making the company one of the most closely watched employers in AI.

A selection process built around judgment

According to Bloomberg, the hiring process can stretch through as many as five rounds of interviews and assessments. Before candidates reach interviews with hiring managers or other teams, they are also said to sign an NDA.

Anthropic also generally does not allow the use of AI tools during interviews unless permission is explicitly given. That policy appears designed to show how candidates think on their own rather than how well they can lean on a model.

The interview that feels more like reflection than screening

The part that attracts the most attention is the culture interview. Candidates and career coaches cited by Bloomberg describe it as very different from a standard corporate interview, since it goes beyond job history and technical knowledge.

Interviewers may ask about ethical dilemmas at work, uncomfortable professional situations, controversial opinions a candidate has defended, views on AI risk and safety, and moments when they challenged a decision they believed was wrong. Some candidates have described the experience as feeling “more like therapy” than a job interview.

That style fits with Anthropic’s broader focus on responsible AI development. Daniela Amodei has previously said in a podcast that the company is not looking for a specific belief system.

Instead, it wants people who can stand by what they genuinely believe in, respectfully, even when those views are unpopular. Kevin Landucci, a career coach quoted in the reporting, said candidates are often expected to show a carefully considered discomfort with ethically questionable situations.

Why the company attracts more than engineers

Interest in Anthropic is not limited to software engineers. The company is also drawing applicants from law, finance, recruiting, advertising, operations, and human resources.

Chief Commercial Officer Paul Smith is said to be looking for “highly nontraditional” talent. The focus is not only on elite resumes, but also on people who can deeply understand customers and help other companies apply AI in their own operations.

That approach matches the mission presented on Anthropic’s careers page. The company says it wants to hire people aligned with its larger goal of guiding humanity through the technology revolution in a safe way.

High pay and rapid growth add to the pull

The compensation is part of the appeal, but the scale of Anthropic’s hiring has also become notable. Public workforce data cited by Bloomberg shows the company now has more than 3,000 employees globally, with around 1,000 joining in just the past few months.

Interest has even reached the recruiting team. A London-based recruiter reportedly received more than 1,000 LinkedIn connection requests and hundreds of messages shortly after announcing a new role at the company.

The listed pay ranges on Anthropic’s careers page help explain the attention. Research Engineer, Performance RL is listed at $350,000 to $850,000, while Analytics Data Engineer is shown at $275,000 to $370,000. Software Engineer, Safeguards is listed at $320,000 to $485,000, and Engineering Manager, Cloud Inference AWS at $405,000 to $485,000.

Other posted roles include Staff+ Software Engineer, Privacy at $405,000 to $625,000 and Technical Program Manager, Data Center Infrastructure at $365,000 to $435,000. The numbers vary by role, experience, and location, and employees also receive equity grants that can become more valuable if the company’s valuation rises.

Bloomberg reported that Anthropic is in talks to raise $30 billion at a valuation above $900 billion. The company’s annual revenue is also projected to soon pass $50 billion, up sharply from about $9 billion last year.

Competition for a seat inside Anthropic

The competition for roles has become intense enough that senior figures at other tech companies are said to accept titles that sound lower on paper. Bloomberg highlighted former Workday CTO Peter Bailis, who joined Anthropic as a “member of technical staff.”

The company has also drawn researchers and AI engineers from rivals such as OpenAI and Google DeepMind. A SignalFire report cited by Bloomberg said Anthropic also has one of the highest employee retention rates among major AI companies.

That pressure has pushed some candidates to prepare well before applying. Aline Lerner, founder of Interviewing.io, said successful candidates often pay for mock interviews and specialized preparation before trying to enter Anthropic or OpenAI.

Anthropic’s hiring culture appears closely tied to its origin story. The company was founded by siblings Dario Amodei and Daniela Amodei after they left OpenAI over concerns about AI safety, and that concern appears to shape how Anthropic evaluates the people it hires.
