What immediately separates her from Kratos is the way she fights. The footage presented so far suggests a much faster and more acrobatic combat style, with movements that appear lighter and more agile than Kratos’ familiar heavy, grounded approach.
A New Focus After Months of Rumors
The reveal arrived after months of speculation, and Sony used its latest State of Play presentation to show the game in motion. More than 20 minutes of gameplay footage were included, with around 24 minutes of material shown overall.
That presentation did not lean heavily on pure gameplay from start to finish. Much of what was shown was cutscene-driven, which kept the actual combat portions relatively limited until later in the footage.

The opening of the footage also gave a clear hint about the story’s direction. It begins with Kratos and Atreus saying goodbye to Faye, who has already died, before the narrative shifts toward what happens to her in the afterlife.
That setup suggests a setting that may be far more chaotic than Kratos would expect. It also marks a notable change in emphasis for the series, with Faye no longer treated as a supporting presence around the central conflict.
The Combat That Got People Talking
Interest rose sharply near the end of the trailer, especially around the 18-minute mark. That is when viewers saw the first proper boss fight, and the moment quickly became one of the most discussed parts of the presentation.
Faye’s combat style is the main reason for that reaction. The contrast with Kratos is clear, and many viewers saw the difference as one of the most appealing parts of the new direction.
Early Reactions From Fans
The initial response has been mostly positive, with many fans welcoming a setting built around Faye. At the same time, there is still curiosity about how Santa Monica Studio will shape the character and the wider story.
Some reactions have even turned playful, with fans joking about how much Kratos might miss his usual fighting tools. At the same time, a more cautious view has also emerged, with some players questioning whether the series will feel the same without Kratos as the playable lead.
That tension highlights how strongly Kratos has defined the franchise over the years. Even so, God of War Laufey is already being seen as a major step because it places Faye directly in the spotlight and gives her the role of the story’s new center.
