Indonesia Launches .ai.id, A New Digital Identity For Its Growing AI Ecosystem

Indonesia has introduced a new digital marker for its artificial intelligence ecosystem, and the move is designed to answer a long-standing identity problem. The new .ai.id domain gives local AI startups, researchers, and industry players a clearer national presence at a time when many AI services operating in Indonesia still rely on a foreign-looking digital identity.

That issue is more than cosmetic. The .ai label widely used by AI services is technically tied to Anguilla in the Caribbean, not Indonesia, which makes the arrival of .ai.id a significant shift in how the country wants its AI sector to be represented online.

A national identity for a fast-growing sector

KORIKA, the Indonesian Collaboration Research and Innovation for Artificial Intelligence, describes .ai.id as the world’s first country code top-level domain designed specifically as a digital identity for a country’s AI ecosystem. In that sense, the domain is not only an internet address, but also a signal of direction for Indonesia’s national AI development.

KORIKA Chairman Hammam Riza said the domain matters because Indonesian AI players need an identity space that reflects national pride and competence. He also pointed to the contradiction that many AI services developed in Indonesia appear online under a digital identity associated with another country.

Why the timing matters

The launch comes as AI adoption in Indonesia is accelerating quickly. The Indonesia AI Report 2025 shows that around 45 percent of businesses in Indonesia have already adopted artificial intelligence technology, with adoption rising 47 percent year on year.

KORIKA says that performance places Indonesia among the fastest-growing AI adopters in Southeast Asia. In that context, .ai.id is being positioned both as a symbol and as an official home for the country’s AI industry.

The domain also aligns with Indonesia’s national AI development strategy, which aims to make the country one of Southeast Asia’s main artificial intelligence powers by 2030.

How registration will be opened

The Indonesian Internet Domain Name Manager, PANDI, has prepared a four-phase registration system for .ai.id. The staged approach is meant to prioritize applicants while also protecting trademarks and existing domain owners.

The first phase is Sunrise, running from 2 June to 2 July 2026, and it is reserved for officially registered trademark holders. The next phase, Grandfather, will run from 13 July to 13 August 2026 for active .id domain owners.

After that, PANDI will open the Landrush phase from 24 August to 24 September 2026, when the public can apply through a premium pricing scheme. The final phase, General Availability, begins on 5 October 2026 and opens registration broadly through PANDI’s official registrars.

If more than one party applies for the same domain name, PANDI says it will use an open auction mechanism. The rule is intended to keep the process transparent when popular names are contested.

More than a branding exercise

The purpose of .ai.id goes beyond visual branding or a cleaner web address. It is designed as an official identity for AI actors operating legally in Indonesia, similar to how .gov.id serves government institutions and .ac.id is used by higher education institutions.

That positioning makes the domain part of a broader effort to show that an AI service is developed and operated under the legal jurisdiction of the Republic of Indonesia. The credibility angle is important, especially in a sector where trust can shape how users assess a service.

The domain is also expected to serve as a marker that links an AI product more clearly to the national legal and digital ecosystem. For Indonesia, the launch of .ai.id adds more than a new internet suffix; it creates a formal signpost for a domestic AI landscape that is expanding quickly and becoming more visible across the region.

At the start of implementation, more than 4,000 members of the KORIKA community will be involved, including around 300 verified active members. That gives the new domain a ready base of early users from the moment it is introduced.
