Capcom Sets Onimusha: Way Of The Sword For September 2026, 30-Minute PS5 Demo Available Now

Capcom has put Onimusha: Way of the Sword back on the calendar with a firm release date and an immediate hands-on opportunity for PlayStation 5 players. The new samurai action game is scheduled to launch on September 25, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.

The bigger surprise is that the wait is not entirely necessary to get a first taste of the game. A playable PS5 demo of roughly 30 minutes is available now, giving players an early look at how the series is being rebuilt for this new chapter.

A new starting point for Onimusha

Way of the Sword is not being positioned as a direct sequel to the long-celebrated Onimusha games from the PlayStation 2 era. Capcom is treating it as a fresh beginning, with the story of Oda Nobunaga described as fully closed.

That shift also moves the setting to Kyoto during the Edo period. The game follows the legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi while keeping the dark fantasy tone that has long defined Onimusha.

Genma remain at the center of the conflict

Even with a new setting and lead character, the series’ supernatural threat is still front and center. Genma, the evil spirits drawn from Japanese legend, return as the main enemies Musashi must face.

Survival depends on more than sword skill alone. Musashi also uses newly acquired Oni powers, supported by collected souls that help reinforce the game’s action and progression systems.

What the demo shows

The PS5 demo is built to give a practical look at combat rather than just another cinematic preview. Its roughly 30-minute length is meant to show Musashi fighting through waves of Genma and testing the game’s battle flow.

The trial version also includes a clash with Ganryu, one of Musashi’s iconic rival swordsmen. That encounter adds another layer of interest for players wanting to see how the new Onimusha handles memorable character confrontations.

More danger behind the demons

A recent trailer also added more context to the larger threat behind the demon attacks. It shows how Musashi gains his magical abilities while pointing to the darker force driving the central conflict.

One of the standout scenes is a dramatic boss battle at Mount Oe. There, Dokyo appears as a “mad scientist” antagonist who uses a laboratory to create more Genma.

A key release in Capcom’s 2026 lineup

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is also set to be one of Capcom’s fourth major AAA releases in 2026. It joins Resident Evil: Requiem, Pragmata, and Monster Hunter Stories 3 in the publisher’s upcoming slate.

That placement gives the game added weight within Capcom’s release schedule. For fans of samurai action and the series’ signature dark atmosphere, the available PS5 demo offers the earliest chance to see where Onimusha is headed before September 25, 2026 arrives.
