A serious save-file problem is affecting some Forza Horizon 6 players on Xbox and PC, and the impact can be severe. Reports indicate that progress may disappear at random, while Playground Games continues to investigate the root cause.
The issue matters because Forza Horizon 6 has been widely well received, making the bug especially damaging for players who have already invested many hours into their garages, collections, and progress. Until a permanent fix arrives, the studio has shifted to prevention guidance instead of a final solution.
What players are being told to do
One of the first recommendations is to make sure Gaming Services is fully updated on PC and on Xbox Series X|S. The service is tied to game management and data synchronization, so keeping it current is considered an important safeguard.
On Xbox Series X|S, support also advises turning off Quick Resume for Forza Horizon 6. Although the feature is designed to bring players back into a game quickly, it is now suspected of increasing the risk of save-related issues in this case.
Disabling it requires a few steps on the console. Players need to highlight the game tile, press the Menu button, open Manage game and add-ons, choose Quick Resume settings, and then switch the feature off.
Support further asks players to remain online when exiting the game. That connection is needed so the system can complete the save synchronization process correctly.
Players are also being told to wait for the save file to finish syncing to the cloud before powering off a device or continuing on another one. This is especially important for people who move between Xbox and PC.
Another warning is not to force-close the game while the save screen is active. Turning off the device while the game is still processing should also be avoided, since both actions may interfere with data writing.
If the game shows an “Out of space” message and then crashes, the advice is to check storage space and restart the console through the menu option or the Xbox controller.
Cross-device play appears to be the most sensitive area
Players who switch regularly between Xbox and PC are being asked to be extra careful. Forza Horizon 6 should be closed properly first, and cloud sync should be allowed to finish before opening the game on another device.
That warning suggests the cross-device sync process is one of the most delicate parts of the current problem. While the cause remains unconfirmed, rushing out of the game or moving too quickly between systems may raise the chance of losing progress.
The uncertainty also shows that the investigation is still active. Playground Games has not identified a single confirmed trigger yet, which means the team cannot provide a final corrective patch at this stage.
What to do if a save is already gone
If a save file has already disappeared, support recommends stopping play immediately. The sooner the situation is reported, the better the chances of recovery may be.
Players are then asked to submit a support ticket right away. Acting quickly matters, because new progress can overwrite data that might otherwise still be recoverable.
The problem is more than a minor annoyance, since a lost save can erase hours of driving, vehicle collecting, and achievements. That makes the current guidance especially important for anyone who has made significant progress.
The issue was first drawn wider attention after Neowin highlighted the message from the Forza Support Team. Since then, the focus has shifted from the game’s strong reception to urgent steps meant to protect player progress.
For now, there is still no final word on when the root cause will be found or when a permanent fix will be released. Until Playground Games provides more certainty, Xbox and PC players may need to follow the prevention steps closely every time they play.
