Microsoft is reportedly turning to Amazon to help keep GitHub stable as AI-driven workloads push the platform’s infrastructure harder than expected. The move is striking because the two companies remain among the fiercest rivals in cloud computing.
What is happening around GitHub shows how the AI boom is no longer affecting only chatbot makers and model builders. The pressure is now reaching widely used developer services, where higher activity can quickly translate into heavier compute demand.
AI coding tools are changing GitHub’s load
The main driver is the rapid adoption of AI-powered coding tools, which make it easier for developers to write software. That convenience is also creating a much larger volume of new code and project updates across GitHub.
As commit activity rises, so does the strain on the platform’s systems. GitHub sits at the center of modern software development, so even modest changes in usage can ripple across its infrastructure at scale.
Business Insider reported that Microsoft has been using Amazon to address capacity problems at GitHub after a series of disruptions tied to AI-related activity. The report suggests that the competition for compute power is now affecting core internet services, not just AI labs.
Growth is moving faster than infrastructure plans
GitHub Chief Operating Officer Kyle Daigle wrote on X in April that the platform was on track to reach 14 billion commits in 2026. He said the figure would be up from 1 billion in 2025, highlighting how quickly development activity is expanding.
Microsoft said in a statement to Business Insider that a massive rise in agentic development starting late last year has tested the limits of its infrastructure. The company also said it is accelerating its move to Azure while exploring a multi-cloud strategy for future capacity, elasticity, and horizontal scale.
GitHub was acquired by Microsoft in 2018, and the company had planned to migrate the platform fully to Azure by 2027. That roadmap now faces a more immediate challenge: demand is growing faster than expected.
Why the Amazon step matters
The Amazon arrangement stands out because Azure and Amazon Web Services have spent years competing for the same cloud customers and AI workloads. In this case, however, keeping GitHub available appears to matter more than preserving strict competitive lines.
A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed to Business Insider that GitHub uses multiple cloud providers, but declined to comment specifically on Amazon’s role. Even without further detail, the signal is clear that GitHub is relying on a broader infrastructure mix to handle rising pressure.
The development also fits a wider pattern across the tech industry, where large companies are signing unexpected capacity deals to secure enough compute. A few days earlier, reports said SpaceX had struck a major computing deal with Google and Anthropic.
Google and SpaceX announced a new agreement under which Google will pay SpaceX $920 million per month for AI computing capacity from October 2026 to June 2029. SpaceX was also said to have signed a similar deal with Anthropic.
For GitHub, the challenge is no longer limited to popularity or user growth. The platform must now keep pace with an AI coding wave that is multiplying code changes and pushing core systems toward their limits.
