Apple may be preparing one of its biggest launch schedule shifts in years, and the change could leave buyers of the standard iPhone 18 waiting longer than expected. Instead of arriving alongside the Pro models, the regular version is now being linked to a possible spring 2027 release.
The clearest clue came from Largan Precision, a key camera lens supplier for iPhone. During a shareholder meeting, chairman Lin En-ping said a major U.S. customer had delayed a new product launch until the first quarter of 2027.
Although Largan did not name the company or the product, the timing matches earlier reports about Apple’s next iPhone cycle. That has fueled speculation that Apple may abandon its long-standing habit of unveiling the entire flagship lineup at once.
A split launch could become the new normal
Under the scenario now circulating, Apple would still keep its premium devices in the fall window. That group could include the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the long-rumored foldable iPhone, with a launch reportedly expected at the end of June 2026.
The standard iPhone 18, which some reports say could be branded as the iPhone 18e, and the next iPhone Air are then said to follow in spring 2027. If that happens, Apple would be moving away from the synchronized launch pattern that has defined its modern iPhone strategy.
Why Apple may be changing course
A staggered rollout could help Apple spread demand across the year instead of concentrating it around a single major launch event. It would also give the company more room to manage manufacturing and supply chain pressure.
That operational flexibility may matter even more if Apple is truly preparing a foldable iPhone alongside its existing lineup. Introducing a new category of device can make one launch window crowded, especially when premium and mainstream models are competing for attention.
The foldable iPhone may dominate the first wave
If the new timing is accurate, the first launch phase would likely focus heavily on the foldable model. Reports describe it as a book-style device with an outer display for quick use and a larger inner screen when opened.
Its pricing is also expected to be extremely high. Some reports place it at around $2,000, which would make it one of Apple’s most expensive consumer products.
That premium positioning may be another reason Apple would want to separate the standard model from the first wave. A launch stage centered on the Pro lineup and the foldable phone would leave less room for a lower-profile base model.
What the standard iPhone 18 may still bring
Even if the wait becomes longer, the regular iPhone 18 is still expected to receive meaningful hardware updates. Rumors suggest the device may avoid a dramatic redesign, but it could gain important internal improvements.
The next-generation A20 chip is said to use a 2-nanometer process, a move that should improve performance and power efficiency. Other leaks point to up to 12GB of RAM, a higher-resolution front camera, and a brighter display.
There is also a report that Dynamic Island could be made smaller across the iPhone 18 lineup. If true, that would be one of the most visible design refinements on the next generation.
Apple is also said to be looking for ways to control production costs, which could help limit sharp price increases on new devices. For buyers, the most immediate impact may be timing rather than specifications, because the regular iPhone 18 could arrive much later than the Pro models.
Apple has not confirmed any of these details, so the current picture remains based on leaks and early supply chain signals. Even so, the reports suggest that the company may be preparing a very different launch rhythm for its next iPhone family.
