Microsoft is set to place Office 2019 for Mac into a limited mode that removes basic editing functions. Starting 13 July 2026, the suite will no longer operate normally because Microsoft will not renew the license certificate used to verify the app’s authenticity.
For users who still rely on the software for daily work, the change is significant. Office documents will remain readable, but the ability to create new files, edit existing content, and save changes will disappear.
What still works, and what stops
In Reduced Functionality Mode, users can continue to open and read stored files. The restriction applies across the main Office apps, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote.
That means the core productivity value of the package will be largely gone once the limitation takes effect. Microsoft had previously indicated that Office 2019 could still be used after support ended, but its updated guidance now focuses only on protecting user data rather than preserving normal app operation.
Why Microsoft is taking this route
According to Microsoft, the certificate problem can be fixed through a software update. The issue is that Office 2019 for Mac stopped receiving updates on 10 October 2023, leaving no patch available for this version.
The company’s newer Office 2021 for Mac is in a different position. It remains supported until 13 October 2026, and Microsoft has prepared a certificate update so it can continue working normally after July 2026.
Upgrade becomes the practical option
For Office 2019 users, the remaining choices are narrow. Microsoft says those who want to keep editing documents will need to move to Microsoft Office 2024 or switch to Microsoft 365.
Microsoft 365 brings access to the latest app versions, AI-based features, and cloud storage. For Mac users who want to stay inside the Microsoft ecosystem without losing editing tools, the subscription route is now the clearest path.
The impact reaches beyond Office 2019
Microsoft also noted that some older Microsoft 365 versions on Mac and iOS may be affected by the same certificate issue. In those cases, however, users can resolve the problem by updating the app.
The contrast is now clear between products still under support and those that are not. Office 2019 for Mac will no longer receive repairs, while active Microsoft products remain recoverable through updates.
For Mac users who still depend on Office 2019, the deadline is not just a routine maintenance milestone. After mid-July 2026, the suite will still open files, but the work of editing them will no longer be available.
