Apple may be heading toward one of its biggest iPhone launch changes in years. New supply chain reports suggest the company is preparing a staggered release plan that would separate the iPhone 18 family, while the iPhone Ultra could slip to 2027.
For years, Apple has introduced most new iPhone models in a single September event. If that pattern changes, it could reshape buying cycles, upgrade timing, and the spotlight around Apple’s flagship lineup.
Premium models may still arrive first
The clearest signal points to the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max remaining on a September 2026 schedule. That would keep Apple’s top-tier phones on the company’s familiar launch stage.
By contrast, the standard iPhone 18, the iPhone 18e, and possibly the iPhone Air could move to a spring 2027 release window. If that happens, Apple would be splitting its iPhone lineup across two different launch periods for the first time in more than a decade.
Why the iPhone Ultra may be delayed
The biggest attention remains on the iPhone Ultra, which is also often described as the iPhone Fold. The first foldable iPhone is now being discussed as a 2027 product rather than one that arrives sooner.
Earlier talk had pointed to a possible 2026 launch, but recent supply chain signals indicate a longer development cycle. The company is reportedly still refining the foldable display, durability standards, and hinge design.
That approach fits Apple’s usual strategy of entering new categories only when the technology appears mature enough. In a foldable phone, long-term reliability and user experience are likely to matter more than speed to market.
What the September event could look like
If the split release plan proves accurate, Apple’s September event would likely focus on premium hardware. The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max could take center stage while the standard models wait for a later window.
Reports also suggest Apple may introduce the iPhone Ultra at a September event and release it later, once mass production is ready. That would let Apple build interest early without forcing a launch before the device is fully prepared.
Apple Watch updates and new accessories may also appear at the event. The standard iPhone 18, however, may not be part of that presentation at all if it is moved to 2027.
