Some Galaxy Watch users on Wear OS 6 are dealing with an unusual bug that makes key apps fail the moment they open. The app briefly shows its splash screen, then closes and sends the user straight back to the app drawer.
The issue matters because it affects everyday services such as Gmail, Google Calendar, and WhatsApp. For people who use a smartwatch as a quick standalone device, the bug can block access to urgent messages, mail, and schedule information.
What users are seeing
The malfunction has a fairly consistent pattern on affected devices. An app appears to launch normally, but after a few seconds it shuts down without fully loading.
Reports from users suggest that Gmail is the most common problem, although other apps can be affected as well. One user said the failure was especially frustrating when trying to read urgent email while away from a phone.
Why the problem may not be the apps themselves
Community analysis points to a system-level memory issue rather than a fault in a single app. According to one user, Wear OS 6 can mistakenly treat an app as still active even after it has already been closed.
That confusion can prevent the app from launching again. In effect, the operating system appears to think the app is already running, then aborts the startup process before it reaches the main interface.
The workaround that is helping some users
The simplest fix so far is to Force Stop the affected apps. This clears the app’s stuck state and forces the system to start it fresh the next time it opens.
For some users, that has restored normal access to Gmail and other affected services. The fix is temporary, however, so the issue may return and require the same step again on another app.
There is also better news for users who have already received a newer system update. Some users say the May 2026 security update resolves the problem completely.
That points to a software fix at the operating-system level rather than a hardware fault or a broken app build. It also means Galaxy Watch owners on Wear OS 6 may need to watch for the same symptom until the relevant patch reaches their device.
Why the bug stands out now
The timing is awkward because Google is beginning to roll out Wear OS 7 based on Android 17 for Pixel Watch devices. Many other Android wearables, including Galaxy Watch models, are still expected to remain on Wear OS 6 for some time.
That makes the bug more than a minor inconvenience for a limited group. When a smartwatch cannot reliably open core apps, one of its main advantages, fast access without reaching for a phone, is weakened right away.
For now, Force Stop remains the most practical first step for affected users. If the problem persists, the operating-system update appears to be the more complete fix.
