Apple’s next standard iPhone may be shaping up as a more capable device for AI, even as some of its components are expected to become less expensive. The latest leak around iPhone 18 suggests a clearer push toward on-device intelligence, thinner design changes, and a tighter gap with the Pro lineup.
According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e are expected to ship with 9GB of RAM and a new A20 chip. That combination is being viewed as a key foundation for Apple Intelligence on the next generation of iPhones.
Apple may narrow the gap with the Pro models
If the leak proves accurate, the standard iPhone line could become far more capable for multitasking and local processing. The added memory would also help Apple bring more AI features directly onto the device instead of relying on cloud servers.
That matters because some of the Apple Intelligence features introduced at WWDC 2026 are said to run directly on the phone. More RAM would give the standard models more room to handle those workloads smoothly.
RAM upgrade and a new memory layout
The reported move from 8GB to 9GB of RAM is one of the biggest changes in the leak. Kuo also said the memory configuration may shift from 2GB x 4-die to 1.5GB x 6-die.

A20 is aimed at the AI era
The A20 chip is said to be built on TSMC’s 2nm manufacturing process. It is expected to bring faster performance, better power efficiency, and stronger AI processing than the current generation.
Apple is reportedly keeping some separation between standard and Pro models, though. Several reports suggest the regular iPhone 18 may use an A20 variant with a lower GPU configuration.
Design updates may focus on brightness and slimness
