SNK has placed Metal Slug back at the center of its long-term strategy, and the company’s 30th anniversary push suggests more than a single comeback project is underway. The clearest signal came from the anniversary trailer, which ended with the phrase “MISSION REBOOT.”
That message has fueled expectations that SNK is preparing multiple new titles inside the Metal Slug universe. The company has not revealed the full lineup, but the way the anniversary campaign was framed makes it clear that the series is being treated as a major priority again.
A reboot built around long-term planning
SNK Brand Manager Seungju Song said the “MISSION REBOOT” name was chosen for the franchise’s 30th anniversary celebration. He also addressed the long gap since the last main entry, noting that it has been 17 years since Metal Slug XX launched on PSP in 2009.
According to Song, the goal is not just to produce another nostalgic revival. SNK wants to deliver content that fans actually want while rebuilding the brand with a long-term perspective.
| Key Project Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Anniversary theme | “MISSION REBOOT” |
| Last main entry | Metal Slug XX on PSP in 2009 |
| Gap since last main entry | 17 years |
| Internal coordination | Twice-monthly meetings across departments |
Internal teams are now working across departments
To support that effort, SNK is holding internal meetings twice a month. The sessions bring together staff from development, sales, marketing, and licensing, showing that the reboot is being handled as both a creative and business initiative.
This cross-department setup suggests SNK is trying to keep development direction, marketing strategy, and distribution planning aligned from the start. It also indicates that the company sees Metal Slug as a brand worth rebuilding carefully rather than rushing back to market.
Veteran creators remain part of the plan
Kunihiro Ono, now 36, said there has been a strong internal desire at SNK to revive Metal Slug for a long time. He added that the 30th anniversary was the right moment to announce the project and show the company’s commitment publicly.
Ono said pairing the new game announcement with the anniversary celebration was meant to connect the series’ nostalgia with a new direction that can last longer. That approach fits the broader message SNK has been sending about the reboot.
Naoto Abe, who is 60 and was one of the veteran developers involved in Neo Geo in 1989, is overseeing the Metal Slug Reboot project. His presence adds weight to the project because he brings experience from SNK’s early hardware era.
Abe also clarified that the updated reproduction cartridge of Metal Slug for Neo Geo AES+ is unrelated to the reboot. He described that release as a coincidence rather than part of the same plan.
With veteran oversight, cross-department coordination, and signs that more than one project may be in motion, SNK is positioning Metal Slug for a new chapter after years without a numbered mainline entry. For fans of the side-scrolling shooter, the franchise’s 30th anniversary now looks less like a celebration of the past and more like the beginning of a new rollout.
