Pocket Taco Gets a Violet Retro Refresh, GameSir Keeps Its Vertical Handheld Appeal

GameSir has given Pocket Taco a new look with the arrival of Voltage Purple, adding another retro-inspired option to a controller that already stood out for its unusual vertical format. The change does not affect the hardware’s core function, but it gives the mobile controller a more distinctive presence in a crowded market.

The timing matters because Pocket Taco has remained one of GameSir’s more unusual smartphone accessories. Instead of mounting a phone sideways like many mobile controllers, it is designed for vertical play, turning a handset into something closer to a classic portrait-oriented handheld.

A more striking translucent finish

Voltage Purple uses a transparent shell that leans into the same retro aesthetic seen on many older handhelds and consoles. GameSir pairs the casing with black-dominant buttons, while Start and Select are left as the clear visual exceptions.

That treatment sets it apart from the limited Atomic Purple edition that appeared earlier through Kickstarter. The older version also used a translucent body, but its buttons were entirely purple, making the new variant a cleaner and more contrast-heavy design.

With the new option in place, Pocket Taco now comes in three color choices. Retro Gray remains the base model, while Voltage Purple is positioned as the more eye-catching alternative for users who want a stronger visual identity.

What stays the same

GameSir has not changed the feature set behind the color refresh. Pocket Taco still connects over Bluetooth and uses a 600mAh battery that the company says is enough for several hours of play on a single charge.

The control layout also remains intact, with a cushioned membrane D-pad and ABXY buttons, inline triggers and bumpers, and silicone pads meant to protect the phone while it is mounted. The controller also includes button remapping through the GameSir app and a keyboard mode.

Built for play while charging

One practical detail remains one of the device’s strongest selling points: a bottom opening that allows a charging cable to stay connected during play. That means users can keep powering their phone without ending the session.

The package is rounded out with a travel case, a charging cable, and a lanyard, reinforcing its portable focus. The controller also powers on automatically when opened and shuts down when closed, keeping the handling simple.

GameSir’s new colorway arrives as the vertical mobile controller category draws more attention, with 8BitDo also preparing its FlipPad after showing it at CES 2026. The USB-C controller is expected to arrive in the summer, adding more competition to a niche that Pocket Taco is helping to define.
