For the first time, a Chinese-made SSD has been tested in a Lenovo laptop, marking a notable shift in the laptop storage market. The drive comes from YMTC and was fitted inside the Lenovo ThinkBook 14 G9 IPL.
The move stands out because the SSD market for laptops has long been dominated by major names from the US, Korea, and Japan, including Samsung, Kioxia, and Western Digital. At the same time, storage and memory prices have come under pressure from the surge in AI data center demand, making the market tougher for established suppliers.

YMTC, short for Yangtze Memory Technologies, is a Chinese company founded about ten years ago. Its name has not been widely known in the laptop SSD segment, but that is beginning to change as supply from established players is said to be shrinking.
Performance on the ThinkBook unit was not especially strong by office-laptop standards. The drive’s sequential read and write speeds reached 3950 MB/s and 2514 MB/s, while its 4K random performance also failed to stand out.
Even so, the appearance of a Chinese SSD inside a laptop from one of the largest PC OEMs by volume remains an important signal. It suggests that the storage market is no longer moving in the same predictable direction it once did.
For years, NAND storage devices and SSDs kept getting cheaper, which helped fast storage become common in laptops. That trend has changed as RAM, SSDs, and even HDDs are being pulled into AI data centers, contributing to higher memory prices and, in turn, higher laptop prices.
In that environment, room opens up for newer suppliers. Lenovo’s use of a YMTC drive shows how supply pressure can influence component choices in mass-market laptops, while also indicating that Chinese SSDs are starting to move beyond the margins of the industry and into real consumer products.
