Character.ai is moving deeper into entertainment with a format that blends short-form drama and chatbot interaction. The company is preparing micro-dramas that users can watch and then talk to through the characters themselves.
The project marks a notable expansion for the Google-founded company, which is now testing how AI can turn a scripted series into a more interactive experience. Character.ai said the initiative is being developed with several Hollywood writers and is aimed at users aged 18 and above.
A short series that does not end when the episode ends
Each episode is written by Hollywood writers and produced with AI technology. Once the micro-drama is released, the characters inside it can be reached through Character.ai’s chatbot, allowing viewers to interact rather than simply watch.
Users can also build their own stories around those AI characters. That opens the door to fan fiction tied directly to the series, combining viewing and interaction in one ecosystem.
| Micro-Drama | Genre | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Last Summer | Romance | One of the first titles released |
| The Nighttime Game | Horror | One of the first titles released |
| Edenfall | A mix of The Hunger Games and Ready Player One-style concepts | Centers on a group of players testing a new beta game |
Character.ai has launched three micro-dramas at the initial stage. The lineup includes the romantic series Last Summer, the horror title The Nighttime Game, and Edenfall, which combines competition and game-world elements.
The company did not identify the Hollywood writers involved. It did say they have experience on projects for Nickelodeon, Netflix, DreamWorks, and Blumhouse.
Faster production, but not at the expense of quality
CEO Karandeep Anand said AI makes the production cycle much shorter than traditional animation. One series can reportedly be completed in about 40 days, while conventional animation can take up to six months.
Even so, Character.ai says it is not trying to flood the market with AI content for the sake of volume. Anand said the goal is not to build a generic AI content machine for Gen Z, but to create a format that can evolve further.
In the early phase, the company is still using internal AI models to refine the format, production workflow, and the type of micro-drama audiences prefer. Over time, Character.ai wants those tools to become something creators can use directly.
The long-term plan is to let creators build their own series and share them with a global audience. According to Hollywood Reporter, the chatbot interaction and connected fan fiction features could also open a new revenue stream for the company.
