Meccha Chameleon Shocks Steam, 2 People Built It in 2 Months

Meccha Chameleon has become one of the most unusual success stories on Steam. The indie game was built by just 2 people in 2 months, yet it has already reached a sales figure that places it among the platform’s most eye-catching breakout titles.

By 5 July, the game was claimed to have sold 15 million copies. Using the Steam price of around Rp 58.499 per copy, that would put gross sales near Rp 877 miliar, before Steam’s distribution cut, taxes, regional pricing, and any discounts are taken into account.

Word-of-mouth growth instead of a big marketing push

One of the biggest surprises behind that performance is how little the game relied on paid promotion. Developer Haganeiro said Meccha Chameleon grew through word of mouth and did not spend anything on promotion.

Streamers and content creators also helped widen its reach by showing the gameplay to large audiences. After launch, the development team kept releasing updates almost every day, including bug fixes, new language support, and a new map.

Steam activity has stayed high

SteamDB data for Tuesday, 7/7/2026, at 16.00 WIB showed around 40,600 players were active at the same time. In the previous 24 hours, the game’s peak concurrent count reached 141,582 players.

The all-time peak stands at 340,534 concurrent players. That placed Meccha Chameleon at No. 44 on the list of the most-played Steam games by concurrent users, just below Resident Evil Requiem, which held No. 43 with 344,214 players.

Simple gameplay helped the game spread quickly

The game’s mechanics are easy to grasp, which likely helped it move beyond niche audiences. Players are split into 2 teams, Hider and Hunter, in a hide-and-seek format that is simple for newcomers to understand.

Unlike ordinary hide-and-seek, Hider players do not turn into objects. Instead, they spray paint over their white character so they can blend into the environment like a chameleon.

The stronger the match between the character’s body color and the background, the harder it becomes for opponents to find them. That setup has produced many funny and creative moments in play.

Players often disguise themselves as part of a painting, a wall, or other objects inside the map. Those scenes are easy to share on social media, which has likely added more momentum to the game’s rise.

An idea that started with a simple concept

Haganeiro said the game began with a basic idea: painting the body in a hide-and-seek game. The next day, he and Lemorion started developing it immediately.

During production, Haganeiro handled the game systems while Lemorion worked on character models and maps. The pair continued refining the gameplay throughout development.

Meccha Chameleon is currently available on PC and GeForce Now. There is no information yet on whether it will arrive on consoles or mobile platforms.
