WhatsApp is once again drawing a harder line around older phones, and the impact is now being felt by users of several aging iPhone and Android models. The app’s support policy is set to change again later in 2026, which means some devices still working today may soon lose access.
The move reflects a broader pattern in which WhatsApp keeps aligning the app with newer operating systems. The company says the shift is meant to support performance and security for its more than 3 billion users worldwide.
Why older phones are being left behind
WhatsApp explains in its help center that support for older devices and operating systems is phased out over time. Phones that are too old often cannot keep up with features such as end-to-end encryption, AI functions, and newer user interface demands.
Security is also a major factor behind the decision. Devices that no longer receive updates from Apple or Google are considered more exposed to security risks, making them less suitable for continued app support.
Current minimum system requirements
At present, iPhone users need iOS 15.1 or later to keep using WhatsApp. Android devices must run Android 5.0 or later for now.
| Platform | Current Minimum Requirement | Next Change |
|---|---|---|
| Android | Android 5.0 or later | Rises to Android 6 on 8 September 2026 |
| iOS | iOS 15.1 or later | Rises to iOS 15.5 from 30 November 2026 |
If a phone does not meet those requirements, access to WhatsApp messaging and calling will be lost. That means devices that cannot be updated may quickly fall behind the app’s main services.
Phones already affected
According to India Times, several older iPhone and Android models are no longer able to access WhatsApp. The list shows how far the support cutoff has already reached on both platforms.
| iPhone | Android |
|---|---|
| iPhone 5s | Samsung Galaxy S4 |
| iPhone 6 | Samsung Galaxy Note 3 |
| iPhone 6 Plus | Sony Xperia Z1 |
| — | LG G2 |
| — | Huawei Ascend P6 |
| — | Moto G first generation |
| — | Motorola Razr HD |
| — | Moto E (2014) |
| — | HTC One X |
| — | Samsung Galaxy S3 |
Some reports have also mentioned iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, and the first-generation iPhone SE. But those devices can still run iOS 15.8.4, which means they remain compatible with WhatsApp for now.
For Android users, any phone still stuck on version 5.0 or below has already lost support. That makes system version checks an urgent step before the next round of changes takes effect in 2026.
Users with older phones may still be able to use the devices for other tasks, but WhatsApp access is becoming increasingly limited as the app raises its baseline requirements. The safest approach is to check the operating system version before the upcoming support changes arrive.
