Samsung’s Rollable Phone Move Could Redefine Its Foldable Lineup

Samsung is reportedly preparing its next major step in flexible display hardware, and this time the focus is not on another foldable. The company is said to be developing a rollable smartphone that could expand into a 10-inch screen, positioning it as a possible successor to the foldable era rather than just another variant.

The reported device comes with a long runway. According to the information circulating around the project, Samsung is aiming for a launch in the first half of 2028, while a follow-up generation is already being discussed for around 2030.

A Larger Screen Without a Fold in the Middle

The standout detail is the display concept itself. Based on information compiled by Omdia, the phone may offer a 10-inch screen when fully expanded, with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a pixel density of around 440.6 ppi.

It has also been referred to under the working name Samsung Z Slide. Samsung has not revealed the final design or the rolling mechanism, so the public picture remains limited to these early details.

Reported detail Information
Screen size 10 inches when expanded
Aspect ratio 16:9
Pixel density About 440.6 ppi
Working name Samsung Z Slide

Why the Timing Matters

If the current timeline holds, Samsung would enter a device category that has long fascinated the smartphone industry but rarely moved beyond concept form. Rollable phones have been shown before, but most have not advanced into mass production.

That makes the reported plan notable, especially because Samsung already leads one of the most established flexible-phone lines with the Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip. The company has also expanded that approach with tri-fold phones, making a rollable model a logical next experiment if the development continues.

From Concepts to a Potential Product

The idea of a rollable smartphone is not entirely new. LG explored the category in 2021, but the device never reached release after the company exited the smartphone business.

Samsung Display has also demonstrated similar concepts before, including Rollable Flex, but those showpieces stopped short of commercial launch. The current reporting matters because it suggests the technology may be moving closer to a real product than it has in previous years.

Money Today reported that Samsung Display is in discussions with Samsung Electronics to supply the panel for the device. Both companies sit under Samsung Group, although no official confirmation has been issued by Samsung so far.

For now, the project remains a report rather than a formal announcement. Still, the prospect of a rollable Samsung phone gives the company another path beyond foldables, and it hints at where the next phase of premium mobile hardware could be headed.
