Lenovo has signaled that it is not leaving the gaming phone market after all. The company has teased a new device, the Legion Phone Y70 New Generation, and has framed it as a phone built for the AI gaming era.
The teaser appeared on the Lenovo Legion Phone account on Weibo. In that post, Lenovo said the device will arrive soon and positioned it as part of a broader effort to keep Legion relevant in mobile gaming.
A return that matters
The announcement stands out because Lenovo had already stepped away from gaming phones in 2023. After that shift, the Legion brand moved its attention to gaming laptops and the Legion Go handheld line.
On the Android side, Lenovo has also leaned more heavily on Motorola since acquiring Motorola Mobility in 2014. In recent years, Lenovo’s own name has appeared more often in tablets than in Android phones, which makes this Legion teaser more notable for mobile gaming followers.
AI is being placed at the center
Lenovo described the Legion Phone Y70 New Generation as “tailor-made for the AI gaming era.” That wording suggests the company wants artificial intelligence to be the main selling point, rather than a minor upgrade.
According to Lenovo’s description, AI is expected to help make the phone more capable and more appealing during gameplay. The company also linked the technology to game control and performance management, two areas that matter most in a gaming-focused handset.
At the same time, Lenovo has not explained how those AI features will actually work. For now, the claim remains a promise rather than a technical demo, and the details will have to wait until the phone is officially introduced.
A name that points back to the earlier Legion Y70
The new model’s name connects it to the Legion Y70, which launched in 2022. That earlier phone came with a 6.67-inch 144Hz display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, and a 5,100mAh battery.
Despite being marketed as a gaming phone, the Legion Y70 took a more restrained approach than some rivals. It did not include shoulder buttons, side-mounted charging ports, RGB lighting, or specialized cooling accessories that are often associated with Asus ROG Phone devices.
That earlier design choice leaves open an important question for the new generation model. Lenovo has not said whether the Legion Phone Y70 New Generation will stay close to the simpler formula or move toward a more premium gaming setup.
A window opens as Asus steps back
Lenovo’s return to gaming phones also arrives at a moment when Asus is pulling away from the segment and holding back its Android device plans. That shift creates a clearer opening for Lenovo to reconnect with users who still want a dedicated gaming phone.
Even so, many of the key specifications remain undisclosed. Lenovo has not confirmed the display, chipset, design, battery, cooling system, or gaming features for the new model.
In a reply to a comment on Weibo, the company only said the device would “definitely live up to expectations.” Lenovo has also indicated that the Legion Phone Y70 New Generation is scheduled for May, which means more of the missing details may surface soon.
