Google Wallet is starting to behave less like a static pass holder and more like a live travel companion. By tapping into Android Live Updates, flight tracking can now appear directly on the lock screen, giving users a quick view of trip progress without opening the app first.
The update turns flight information into a persistent notification with a progress bar. According to Android Authority, which cited findings from 9to5Google, the display can show up in multiple places, including the lock screen, notification shade, always-on display, and even a small pill-shaped area on the top-left of the status bar while the phone is in use.
A more visible way to follow a flight
The main value of Live Updates in Google Wallet is simple: it shows how far along a flight has progressed in real time. In practice, that means passengers can check whether a journey is still in its early stages, approaching the destination, or continuing normally, as long as the aircraft has in-cabin Wi-Fi.
That approach keeps the information compact and easy to scan. Instead of opening a boarding pass just to see whether the flight is moving forward, the status remains visible at a glance, which is useful when conditions in an airport or on board change quickly.
Useful beyond the passenger seat
The feature is not limited to the person traveling. Android Authority also noted that the same pass-based update can help family members or friends keep track of flight progress from a device that displays the related pass.
This gives Google Wallet a broader role than simple ticket storage. With real-time status surfaced more prominently, the app starts to function as a more active travel information hub rather than only a place to keep digital documents.
When the phone is locked, the flight status stays visible on the lock screen and always-on display. When the device is in active use, the information shifts into the status bar so it remains accessible without interrupting what is on the screen.
Part of a larger travel workflow
The Live Updates addition also fits into tools Google Wallet already offers for air travel. The app can automatically pull flight tickets from Gmail, and it sends check-in reminders a few hours before departure.
Wallet also includes a Nearby Pass feature, which helps surface tickets when the system detects that a user has arrived at the airport. Together, those functions make the travel flow feel more connected from the moments before departure through the flight itself.
What the new view shows, and what it still does not
In the examples seen so far, Live Updates appears to focus on in-flight progress rather than every operational detail. Android Authority said the feature was observed on a Pixel device belonging to one of its colleagues, where the flight status kept updating while the aircraft Wi-Fi was available.
At the same time, some information that Google Wallet can already store is not yet part of this Live Updates format. Changes such as gate updates or baggage belt numbers are supported in Wallet, but those details were said not to appear in the new live view yet.
That limitation keeps expectations realistic. For now, the emphasis is on giving users a fast, on-screen readout of flight progress, not a full airport operations dashboard inside one dynamic notification.
Potential for other passes as well
Google’s Live Updates support in Wallet may eventually extend beyond flights. The report noted that the system could also be useful for train travel and other live events, suggesting a wider role for passes that change status in real time.
If that scope expands, Wallet could become more central to everyday travel and event tracking. For now, the most visible benefit is still the ability to monitor a flight from the lock screen, with progress shown in a format designed to stay readable at a glance.
Users who want the feature will need the latest version of Google Wallet, and availability may also depend on Google Play services updates. That means the rollout may not appear on every device at the same moment.
