Google is giving Gemini a small but practical upgrade that addresses one of the most common frustrations in AI chat use. The new branching option lets users split a conversation into a separate chat instead of keeping every topic inside one long thread.
For anyone who uses Gemini for brainstorming, research, and work tasks at the same time, the change should make daily use easier to manage. Conversations can stay cleaner, context becomes simpler to track, and important details are no longer buried inside a crowded chat history.
A practical fix for messy AI threads
One of the biggest problems with chatbot use is how quickly a single conversation can drift across unrelated topics. A chat that starts with one question often ends up holding notes, follow-ups, and side ideas that are not always tied to the original task.
Google is trying to solve that problem with branching, which allows a conversation to be split from a chosen point. Instead of restarting from zero, users can move a topic into a new chat while keeping the relevant context intact.
That approach matters for people who mix several needs in one session. Work discussion, research, and idea collection often happen side by side, and that makes it harder to keep the conversation focused.
Context stays, but the clutter does not

Gemini’s branching feature is designed to reduce that buildup by cutting the thread at a specific point. The new chat carries over the useful context, but it does not keep dragging along later messages that may no longer matter.
This setup is especially helpful when a user wants to compare different directions from the same starting point. The original chat remains available, while the branch gives room to develop one idea more clearly.
Google is catching up in an important area
Branching is not a new concept in the broader chatbot market. ChatGPT and Claude are said to already offer similar tools, which means Gemini had been behind in this particular part of chat management.
The addition also shows that Google is not only focused on headline features. Smaller improvements like this can matter more in everyday use than larger updates that appear more dramatic on paper.
It also lines up with a previous step from Google, when the company began rolling out options to import chats and memory from other AI chatbots at the end of March. The direction is clear: make Gemini easier to adopt for users who already have their own workflows.
Rollout is still limited for now
Google says the branching feature is still being released gradually. Josh Woodward, VP Google Labs, Gemini App, and AI Studio, said the feature is currently available to 20% of Gemini users, and the rollout continues to expand.
When the feature is available, users can find it through the three-dot menu under a chat. From there, the “Branch in new chat” option creates a new conversation from the selected point.
The process is intentionally simple so it does not add more friction to an already busy chat. Users do not need a complicated workflow just to separate one topic from another.
For casual users, the update may seem easy to overlook. But for people who rely on Gemini to handle multiple tasks, research threads, and overlapping ideas, branching offers a cleaner way to keep conversations organized and easier to follow.
