Samsung’s next Ultra phone is being linked to one of the cleanest rear designs the company has attempted in years. The biggest change around the Galaxy S27 Ultra is said to be the removal of the individual camera bumps that have defined the Ultra line for several generations.
Instead of the familiar vertical layout, the rear cameras are rumored to move into a horizontal pillbox-style bar across the top of the phone. That shift would give the back panel a far simpler look and make the Galaxy S27 Ultra stand out as a major reset for Samsung’s flagship design language.
A cleaner back panel, but still unmistakably premium
The reported design direction appears to borrow a little from older Galaxy styling while moving closer to the minimalist approach seen on modern Pixel phones. Samsung is also said to keep the luxurious body finish and curved corners, which should preserve the comfortable in-hand feel that Ultra models are known for.
That combination matters because the design change is not just cosmetic. After several generations of relatively similar camera layouts, Samsung seems ready to make a more visible break from the Galaxy S21 through Galaxy S26 Ultra formula.
Camera hardware is expected to move forward, not backward
Even though the rear may look simpler, the camera system is reportedly getting a meaningful upgrade. The main camera is said to use a 200MP ISOCELL HP6 sensor, which would be a major sensor refresh after several years.
That sensor is also rumored to support LOFIC, or Single-Exposure HDR, aimed at improving image quality by widening dynamic range. The ultra-wide camera is also expected to jump to a 50MP sensor, a significant increase from the older 12MP setup and one intended to improve detail and low-light results.
The telephoto setup may change in a more unusual way. One of the expected shifts is the removal of the 3x optical zoom lens, with Samsung instead relying on a crop from the 200MP main sensor for that zoom range.
Zoom may be simplified, but the periscope lens remains
The periscope camera is still expected to stay in place, using a 50MP sensor. It is said to cover 5x or 10x zoom, with AI processing helping maintain quality during higher magnification.
This points to a broader change in how Samsung may want the Ultra camera system to work. Rather than stacking more visible lenses, the company appears to be leaning harder on sensor resolution and computational photography to handle zoom and detail capture.
Display, silicon, and memory also get a reset
Beyond the camera, the Galaxy S27 Ultra is rumored to feature a 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display. The panel is said to support LTPO 1–120Hz and may use an extremely thin “Zero-Bezel” frame of 1.0 mm.
Performance is also expected to move up with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro, reportedly built on TSMC’s 2nm process. Memory options mentioned in the leaks include 12GB and 16GB of LPDDR6 RAM, with a rumor suggesting 16GB could become the default starting point.
Storage may come in 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB versions using UFS 5.0. That standard is claimed to reach speeds of up to 10.8 Gbps, roughly twice the speed of UFS 4.0.
Battery, charging, and S Pen support stay part of the package
Battery capacity is also said to rise to 5,500mAh, using silicon-carbon technology to fit more capacity without increasing thickness. Wireless charging support is expected to include Qi2, which could make the device one of Samsung’s first large phones to adopt the new standard.
Qi2 magnetic support is also rumored to open the door to MagSafe-style magnetic accessories. On wired charging, the leaked specification points to 65W, which would pair with the larger battery and the newer wireless standard for faster daily charging.
Samsung is also expected to keep the S Pen, despite earlier speculation that it might be removed. That detail matters because it preserves one of the most recognizable productivity features of the Ultra series.
Software points to a more ambitious AI layer
The software side is said to run One UI 9.5 based on Android 17. It is also linked to Galaxy AI 2.0, with capabilities described as more advanced and more “agentic.”
Taken together, the leaks paint a clear picture of the Galaxy S27 Ultra’s direction. Samsung appears to be aiming for a phone that looks much cleaner on the outside while pushing harder on camera processing, display refinement, battery technology, and flagship-level productivity features.
