Apple Readies AI Photo Editing Tools for iPadOS 20 and macOS 20, Taking Aim at Google and Samsung

Apple is preparing a broader push into AI-powered image editing, with new tools expected to arrive across iOS 20, iPadOS 20, and macOS 20. The move could make Apple Intelligence more useful in everyday photo editing and bring Photos into a more competitive position against Google and Samsung.

The clearest sign of that shift is Apple’s plan to add generative AI features that go beyond simple touch-ups. Instead of relying on separate editing apps, Apple appears ready to build more advanced visual tools directly into its own ecosystem.

A new layer inside Photos

Inside the Photos app, Apple is reportedly developing new ways to change backgrounds, improve composition, and process images more quickly. The goal is to make editing feel simpler while still preserving the original character of each photo.

One of the standout features is called Extend. It uses generative AI to automatically enlarge a photo’s background, creating a wider and more dramatic frame without damaging the original details. Another feature, Reframe, is intended to adjust a photo’s perspective after it has been taken.

Reframe is also designed to support spatial photos. That gives users more control when a shot needs a different angle, without forcing them to retake the image.

More automatic enhancement tools

Apple is also preparing Enhance, a tool that adjusts lighting and sharpness automatically. The system analyzes each pixel so color correction looks natural and still matches the photo’s lighting conditions.

These features are expected to sit under a new umbrella called Apple Intelligence Tools. In that structure, Clean Up would no longer stand alone and would instead become part of a more organized set of editing functions.

For users, that could make Photos feel significantly more capable without pushing them toward third-party editors. Apple seems to want image processing to become a core part of the device experience rather than an extra step.

How Apple is taking a different route

Apple has often been seen as more cautious than Google and Samsung in AI photo editing. Its rivals already give users broader freedom to alter images with generative tools.

Google, in particular, is still viewed as setting the benchmark with Magic Editor, which launched in 2023. Apple is choosing a different path, but it still aims to deliver strong visual results with AI.

That difference may become one of Apple’s selling points. Google and Samsung emphasize wide creative flexibility, while Apple appears focused on balancing attractive results with a more natural look.

Privacy remains central

Even with a stronger push into generative AI, Apple continues to place privacy at the center of its approach. The company is said to prioritize on-device processing so user data stays safer than in cloud-based systems.

That approach fits Apple’s long-standing image. As many AI features depend heavily on external servers, Apple is trying to combine strong performance with tighter data protection.

What comes next

Full technical details for iOS 20 are expected to be announced in the middle of the year. Many Apple fans are also waiting for an official reveal at WWDC 2026 to see how far these AI photo tools will go.

If the plan moves forward as expected, Photos could evolve from a standard image app into a much more powerful creative tool. That would also give Apple a stronger answer to the AI editing features already offered by its biggest rivals.
