Google is expanding its AI Studio footprint in India by building a dedicated team there, even as much of the tech industry continues to cut jobs. The move stands out because India is described as the largest market for Google AI Studio users, making the country a central part of Google’s broader Gemini strategy.
Logan Kilpatrick, who leads Google AI Studio, said Google is hiring for a DevX team that will serve as the starting point for Google AI Studio’s presence in India. He also noted that the team is being built to help developers get more out of Gemini.
Google AI Studio is a browser-based developer tool used to prototype and experiment with Google’s Gemini models. It is designed to let developers build AI-powered applications without setting up a full development environment first.
Once a prototype is ready, developers can generate a Gemini API key. That key allows work created in AI Studio to be used directly in their projects.
The focus on India is closely tied to developer activity in the country. Kilpatrick said India is the largest market for Google AI Studio users, which helps explain why Google is placing local resources there.
The timing also highlights how different Google’s approach looks from the wider technology sector. Companies including Amazon, Meta, and Oracle have continued restructuring and carrying out layoffs, while Google is adding a new team around one of its AI tools.
Kilpatrick described the new group as a DevX team. Its broader mission will be to make Gemini easier to use for the developer community, which points to a push that goes beyond simple product expansion.
That emphasis on developer experience matters because ease of use often shapes which AI platform builders choose. By focusing on DevX, Google appears to be targeting the practical side of adoption, not just awareness of the tool itself.
In a post on X, Kilpatrick invited people who want to help builders get the most out of Gemini in India to reach out. He said interested candidates could send a direct message or email to express interest.
Google has not shared how many roles are open. The company has also not explained the selection criteria or the internal structure of the team.
A local team could give Google AI Studio a stronger foothold in one of the world’s biggest developer markets. It may also make it easier for feedback from Indian users to reach the people shaping Gemini’s tools.
Kilpatrick said he plans to visit India later this year. Even so, Google has not detailed where the DevX team will be based, how it will operate, or whether more expansion is planned after this initial step.
For now, the message is clear: Google sees India not only as a major market, but as a place worth building around directly. With the country already identified as Google AI Studio’s largest user base, the new team places India even more firmly inside Google’s AI roadmap.
