Nord CE 6 Faces Shorter Software Support Than Its Predecessor, According to Reports

OnePlus’ latest Nord CE phone is drawing attention for a reason that has little to do with its hardware. Early reports suggest the Nord CE 6 may receive a shorter software support window than the older Nord CE 5, even though long-term updates have become a major selling point for smartphone buyers.

That detail matters because software support now plays a central role in how people judge a phone’s value over time. For many buyers, the real question is no longer only what the device looks like or how fast it performs, but how long it will keep getting Android upgrades and security patches.

According to OnePlus Club on X, the Nord CE 6 is expected to go only as far as Android 18. By contrast, the Nord CE 5 is said to remain supported through Android 19.

If that report is accurate, the newer model would get just two Android version updates. That would be less than the four Android updates previously promised for the Nord CE 5.

The gap does not end with operating system upgrades. GSMArena, citing another source, reports that the Nord CE 6 will receive four years of security updates, while the Nord CE 5 is set for six years.

That means the older model appears to offer the longer and more generous support cycle. For shoppers who keep a phone for years, that difference can matter as much as design or performance.

A confusing message from launch materials

The situation becomes even more interesting when looking at how OnePlus presented the Nord CE 6 at launch. In its promotional material, the company highlighted OxygenOS 16 and promised six years of fast and smooth performance.

OnePlus also emphasized “system fluency” and reliability. What it did not do was state clearly how many Android upgrades or how many years of security patches the device would receive.

That distinction is important. A promise of six years of smooth experience is not the same as a promise of six years of operating system updates or security support. Many consumers may naturally assume those terms mean the same thing, but they do not.

Why the older model looks stronger on paper

The Nord CE 5 was introduced with clearer wording on support. It launched with OxygenOS 15 based on Android 15 and was promised four Android upgrades, taking it to Android 19.

It was also said to receive six years of security updates. On paper, that makes the previous model both more transparent and more attractive for long-term ownership.

By comparison, the Nord CE 6 appears less straightforward. Its launch messaging sounds strong, but the reported update commitments are shorter and less precise.

Still waiting for a direct explanation

OnePlus has not yet given a detailed explanation for the reported drop in update commitment. A request for comment has also been made to clarify the software support plan for the Nord CE 6.

For now, the company’s launch message and the circulating reports do not fully align. That leaves buyers with an important unanswered question about why the newer phone would seemingly receive less software support than its predecessor.

The issue matters especially in the midrange market, where software longevity is increasingly part of the buying decision. Many users now weigh update policies almost as heavily as specifications, and in this case the older Nord CE 5 looks like the safer choice on long-term support.
