Qualcomm’s Standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Looks Like The Sweet Spot For Premium Phones

Qualcomm’s next flagship chip is shaping up to be more than just a performance upgrade, and the most appealing version may turn out to be the standard one. Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 is expected to combine stronger speed, more aggressive power efficiency, and a broader push for AI and high-end gaming.

The strategy also looks different this time. Qualcomm is reportedly preparing a Pro variant for the first time, but the regular model is still said to carry a well-balanced hardware setup that may suit more premium phone buyers.

2 nm fabrication puts efficiency at the center

Leaks suggest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 will be built on TSMC’s 2 nm process. If that proves accurate, it would place the chip among the first smartphone SoCs to use the new node.

A shift to 2 nm usually brings better energy efficiency. In practical terms, that can reduce battery drain while giving Qualcomm more room to raise performance.

The competition in this segment is also expected to intensify. MediaTek and Apple are reportedly preparing 2 nm smartphone chipsets in a similar timeframe.

A new CPU layout may be the real draw

According to Digital Chat Station, the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 will move away from the familiar “2+6” CPU setup. Qualcomm is said to be switching to a “2+3+3” configuration with two prime cores, three performance cores, and three efficiency cores.

That approach appears designed to improve efficiency without giving up premium-level capability. The chip is also said to use Oryon CPU cores, with L2 cache rising to 16MB from 12MB on Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.

Clock speeds are also expected to remain very high. Rumors point to a peak of 5.0 GHz, or at least a figure close to that level.

Gaming performance is still a priority

On the graphics side, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 is said to use the Adreno 845 GPU with Qualcomm’s slice-based architecture. The leaked specification list also mentions 12MB of GMEM graphics cache and 6MB of system cache, or LLC.

Those details matter because they affect graphics load, latency, and consistency under heavy gaming. Qualcomm is also expected to keep Snapdragon Elite Gaming features, including ray tracing support.

The Pro model is said to step up further with an Adreno 850 and larger cache. Even so, the standard version is still positioned as a serious flagship chip for gaming-focused phones.

AI and connectivity are also getting stronger

AI details remain thinner than the CPU and GPU leaks, but the direction is clear. Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 is expected to bring an upgraded Hexagon NPU, better power efficiency, newer language model support, and wider generative AI capability.

The chip is also expected to push more advanced on-device AI experiences. That could allow more tasks to run locally instead of relying heavily on the cloud.

Connectivity is another area set for improvement. Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 is said to feature the Snapdragon X90 5G modem, which reportedly includes AI hardware directly in the baseband and peak download speeds of up to 15Gbps on 5G networks.

The standard model may be the smarter choice

Memory support could be one of the main differences between the two versions. The standard chip is expected to keep using LPDDR5X, while storage support is said to move up to UFS 5.0.

The Pro variant is reportedly the one that jumps to LPDDR6. In theory, that faster memory could help on-device AI, image generation, power efficiency, and high-FPS gaming at larger resolutions.

That split may leave the regular Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 looking like the more practical option. It still delivers flagship-level performance, but without pushing every specification to the extreme.

Several premium phones are already being linked to the standard version, including the Samsung Galaxy S27, Samsung Galaxy S27+, OnePlus 16, iQOO 16, and Xiaomi 18. If these leaks hold up, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 will become a key engine for the next wave of Android flagships.
