Huawei’s next premium phones are being linked to a camera setup that could push zoom performance back into the spotlight. Early leaks around the Mate 90 family point to the Mate 90 Pro Max and Mate 90 RS as the models most likely to carry a dual periscope telephoto system.
That detail matters because dual periscope hardware is still uncommon in flagship phones. In the premium segment, Oppo’s Find X line has been one of the best-known examples of this approach, so Huawei’s reported move could reshape the conversation around long-range mobile photography.
A 10x zoom setup is the center of attention
The most talked-about part of the leak is a potential 10x optical periscope lens on the larger model. Reports circulating online say Huawei is testing two periscope telephoto cameras for an upcoming flagship prototype, with the engineering unit said to use two 50-megapixel periscope sensors.
If that configuration survives into the final product, the Mate series would gain a much stronger long-distance shooting focus. Rather than treating zoom as a secondary feature, Huawei appears to be positioning it as one of the main selling points for its next top-tier phones.
The leak was originally linked to Digital Chat Station. The post was reportedly removed before the details spread again through followers online, which helped fuel interest around the Mate 90 lineup.
More than just cameras
Camera hardware is not the only part drawing attention. The same leak also suggests that the Mate 90 Pro Max and Mate 90 RS may come with battery capacities in the 6,800mAh to 7,000mAh range.
That is a significant figure for premium phones that are expected to handle heavy photography, video recording, and daily use without frequent charging. A large battery would also make sense for devices with large displays and complex camera modules.
The reported direction shows Huawei trying to balance imaging ambition with endurance. In the flagship space, that combination often matters as much as raw camera specifications.
A large display is also part of the package
The leaked information also points to a new 6.9-inch Tandem OLED display. It is said to bring improvements in brightness, efficiency, and panel durability, all of which would strengthen the premium feel of the device.
A screen of that size fits the role of the Pro Max and RS variants, which are typically placed at the top of a product family. It also aligns with a device strategy built around multimedia use and advanced camera work.
The mention of Tandem OLED suggests Huawei is not focusing on imaging alone. Visual quality and power efficiency are also being treated as important parts of the flagship experience.
Performance upgrades are expected too
On the performance side, the Mate 90 series is also said to be getting a meaningful uplift compared with the current generation. The exact chipset has not been revealed, but the leak clearly indicates a stronger platform is being prepared.
For context, the Mate 80 RS uses the Kirin 9030 Pro. That phone also features a 6.9-inch dual-layer OLED screen with LTPO adaptive refresh rate support, along with several 50-megapixel cameras and Huawei’s internal imaging technology.
Against that backdrop, a dual periscope system on the Mate 90 line would stand out most clearly in the zoom and long-range photography area. That is where the next generation appears to be aiming for the biggest leap.
Premium competition may shift again
Huawei’s reported testing has immediate implications for the premium camera race. Dual periscope zoom has been more closely associated with Oppo’s high-end strategy, so Huawei entering that space more aggressively would make the competition more direct.
The current leaks still come from prototype testing, so final specifications can change before launch. Even so, the direction is already visible: Huawei seems determined to strengthen zoom, battery life, and display quality at the same time for its most premium Mate models.
