iOS 27 Could Turn Siri Into an AI Chat App, With Search and Automation Overhauled

Apple’s next major software cycle is shaping up to put AI at the center of the iPhone experience. The clearest signal comes from early iOS 27 chatter, which points to a redesigned Siri that moves far beyond the familiar voice assistant model.

The biggest change would be how people interact with Siri. Instead of feeling like a simple command tool, the assistant is said to be rebuilt to work more like modern AI chatbots such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude.

Bloomberg reports that Apple is preparing a broader AI interface for iPhone, not just a small refresh. The goal appears to be a new experience that makes Siri more conversational, more persistent, and more useful across the system.

A separate Siri app is reportedly in the works

Based on Bloomberg’s illustration, which was created from information provided by people familiar with Apple’s plans, Siri may appear as its own dedicated app on iPhone. That would mark a major shift from the older Siri experience, which mostly relied on short prompts and a basic overlay.

The new interface is said to support both text and voice in one place. It is described as a dark-themed screen with an “Ask Siri” field at the bottom, a microphone button for voice input, and an attachment button for uploading files.

That design would allow back-and-forth conversations in a more continuous way, similar to how users interact with chatbot-style AI products. Conversation history is also said to be available, with the option to delete it automatically after a certain period.

Search on iPhone may feel more like asking Siri

iOS 27 is also expected to introduce a “Search or Ask” interface that opens by swiping down from the middle-top area of the iPhone screen. The result would be a faster way to search or start a Siri interaction directly from the home screen.

Search results are said to appear as rich text cards integrated with Dynamic Island. Apple is also reportedly building an AI-powered search system that will work alongside this new experience.

Within the same interface, a refreshed version of Siri Suggestions is also said to be part of the plan. It would highlight frequently used apps, recent searches, weather information, and shortcuts for common tasks.

AI expansion is not limited to Siri

The wider AI push in iOS 27 appears to extend into several Apple apps, including Camera, Photos, and Shortcuts. In Camera, Apple is said to be preparing a special Siri mode that would replace the current Visual Intelligence feature.

That camera feature is described as allowing users to capture an object and analyze it using third-party AI services or reverse search. Camera may also gain a new “Add Widgets” panel for arranging shortcut controls.

Through that panel, users would be able to prioritize options such as depth adjustment, timer controls, and Night mode based on personal preference. The idea is to make common camera actions easier to access.

Photos is also expected to receive new Apple Intelligence editing tools called Reframe and Extend. Reframe is said to change image perspective, while Extend would use generative AI to fill in missing parts of a photo.

Shortcuts may undergo one of the most practical changes of all. Rather than building automations manually, users could simply describe the action they want in natural language, and Siri would create the automation automatically.

What this means for the iPhone experience

If these reports prove accurate, Siri would move from a simple voice assistant to a more active layer connecting different parts of the iPhone. It would not only answer questions, but also help search, understand context, process images, and build automations.

Apple is expected to show iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS updates, and the latest Siri experience during the WWDC 2026 keynote scheduled for June 8. That presentation will be the key moment to see how much of this direction becomes official.

For now, the details remain in the realm of leaks and reporting. Even so, the direction is clear enough: iOS 27 is being shaped as an AI-first update, with Siri positioned as its main public face.
