What makes the ROG Xbox Ally X20 stand out is not only the move to OLED, but the way Asus has chosen to package the device. The handheld is being positioned as a more polished premium option, yet it will not be sold on its own.
Instead, Asus plans to offer it only as a holiday-season bundle with the AR R1 smart glasses developed with Xreal. That sales strategy immediately raises questions about affordability, especially since the glasses alone cost USD 849 when sold separately.
A bigger leap on the display side
The most visible upgrade on the ROG Xbox Ally X20 is its 7.4-inch 1080p OLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate. Asus pairs that with 600 nits of SDR brightness and up to 1,400 nits of peak HDR brightness, along with VESA DisplayHDR TrueBlack 1000 and Dolby Vision support.
The company also widens the Variable Refresh Rate range from 48Hz down to 30Hz. That adjustment is meant to help the display stay smoother when game performance drops below the ideal level.
Performance remains familiar
Under the hood, Asus keeps the same core hardware found in the previous setup. The handheld still uses AMD Z2 Extreme, supported by 24GB of 8000MT/s RAM and 1TB of storage.
That choice shows Asus is not trying to reinvent the performance base. The bigger push is aimed at improving the parts players notice most during daily use, especially the screen, controls, and cooling behavior.
Controls get a more deliberate redesign
One of the common complaints from the earlier generation was the placement of the “Library” button, which could be pressed by mistake. On the Ally X20, Asus removes it and replaces it with an “Action” button.
The new button has a clearer purpose. A single press takes a screenshot, while a long press records the screen, bringing the control logic closer to what many users expect from a modern console-style device.
Asus also adds GuliKit TMR anti-drift joysticks. The D-pad can be switched between 8-direction and 4-direction modes by rotating it, while the ABXY buttons and bumpers have been revised for a different feel.
Cooling changes come with a larger body
The updated cooling system is part of the reason the device grows in size. Asus says the new thermal design is meant to help keep the display area cooler, but the trade-off is a larger chassis overall.
Compared with its predecessor, the Ally X20 is 9 mm wider, 0.5 mm thicker, and 41 grams heavier. Asus also moves the microSD slot to the faster microSD Express format, and the Xbox logo button now includes a green LED.
The bundle may matter as much as the hardware
The most unusual part of the launch is not the spec sheet, but the distribution plan. Because the ROG Xbox Ally X20 will be sold only in a bundle, buyers who want the handheld will also have to account for the included AR glasses.
That arrangement could push the total cost far above what many handheld gaming buyers expect. With pricing for the bundle still undisclosed, the final figure may become the main factor shaping demand, even as Asus addresses many of the complaints that followed the earlier model.
