OnePlus appears to be preparing a notable shift in its next flagship display strategy, and the most striking part of that direction is the possibility of a 240Hz OLED panel. At the same time, the company is also being linked again with 2K resolution, although that option would reportedly depend on whether the panel can sustain very high refresh rates without creating a heavy power penalty.
The display roadmap shared by tipster Digital Chat Station on Weibo suggests a gradual climb in refresh rate rather than a sudden leap. The sequence is said to begin at 165Hz, move to 185Hz, and then advance toward 240Hz, which points to a clear priority on fluid motion and responsiveness.
That focus does not appear to come with an immediate push toward higher resolution. OnePlus is currently said to prefer 1.5K panels for its next-generation lineup, while 2K is being kept as a possible future option if panel technology improves enough to support faster refresh rates more efficiently.
A display strategy built around speed
The rumored direction shows that OnePlus is treating smoothness as the main target first. A higher refresh rate can make animations, scrolling, and general navigation feel more immediate, and the reported progression from 165Hz to 240Hz fits that approach.
At the same time, the company is being cautious about how much extra power a more demanding display would need. That is why 2K is not described as the default plan, but rather as something that could return only if the hardware can handle both sharpness and efficiency at once.
Why 2K is not the immediate priority
A 2K panel paired with 240Hz sounds ambitious for a smartphone, but it also creates a difficult balance. Higher resolution improves clarity, while a very high refresh rate can make motion look far smoother, yet both changes usually increase the burden on battery life and system efficiency.
For that reason, OnePlus appears to be taking a staged approach instead of making every upgrade at once. The company seems more interested in proving that faster panels can work well in daily use before taking on the heavier load of a 2K display.
OnePlus 16 may serve as the transition model
The OnePlus 16 is now part of the conversation as a possible bridge between current hardware and the more aggressive display goals ahead. It is expected to succeed the OnePlus 15 and is reportedly due to arrive at the end of this year.
Earlier reports indicate that the OnePlus 16 could bring a 185Hz refresh rate, while its resolution may remain close to the current generation. By comparison, the OnePlus 15 is said to feature a 1.5K OLED panel with a 165Hz refresh rate.
If those details prove accurate, the OnePlus 16 would represent a measured step forward rather than the final destination. That would leave room for a later move toward the more extreme 240Hz target and, potentially, a return to 2K when the display technology is ready.
How 240Hz fits the premium market
A 240Hz smartphone display would still be unusual in the flagship segment, which is part of why the rumor has attracted attention. In practice, such a panel would underline OnePlus’ intention to compete through display responsiveness as much as through cameras or chipset performance.
The benefits of a refresh rate that high would be most noticeable in gaming and other fast-moving content. For everyday use, 120Hz already feels smooth to many users, so the appeal of 165Hz, 185Hz, or 240Hz is mainly tied to more demanding visual scenarios.
OnePlus 16 is also being linked with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and a large silicon-carbon battery, though the company has not confirmed any of those specifications. For now, the refresh-rate path, the possible return to 2K, and the broader display plan all remain part of the rumor cycle, but the direction is becoming increasingly clear.
