Millions of WhatsApp users on older phones may soon need to check whether their devices still qualify for support. Starting in mid to late June 2026, the app will tighten its minimum operating system requirements, and devices that fall short risk losing access to chats, calls, and other core functions.
The shift reflects WhatsApp’s growing reliance on newer software to support stronger security and AI-based features. As a result, older phones that no longer receive manufacturer updates are gradually being left behind.
iPhones that will no longer be supported
For Apple users, WhatsApp will require iOS 15.5 or later. That means several older models will no longer remain on the fully supported list.
The iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus are among the devices that will lose WhatsApp access. By contrast, the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, and first-generation iPhone SE can still be used for now because they continue to support higher iOS versions.
Android phones affected by the change
On the Android side, the minimum standard is moving up to Android 6. Many older phones that are still running Android 4.4 KitKat or anything below it will be affected.
The list of models said to lose access includes the Samsung Galaxy S3, Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 3, Sony Xperia Z1, LG G2, Huawei Ascend P6, first-generation Moto G, Motorola Razr HD, Moto E (2014), and HTC One X. On these devices, the app may no longer open at all.

Once official support ends, the impact goes beyond simply failing to open the app. Users may also lose the ability to send or receive messages, make calls, and use other standard WhatsApp features.
