iOS 27 May Leave iPhone 11 Behind, Apple’s New AI Demands Start at iPhone 12

The discussion around iOS 27 is already raising concern among iPhone owners who still rely on older models. The update is being linked to a major push in AI and connectivity, but the tradeoff may be a narrower list of supported devices.

The clearest point of attention is iPhone 11. Current leaks suggest that iOS 27 may only support the iPhone 12 series and newer, which would leave the iPhone 11 series and the second-generation iPhone SE outside the main update list.

Hardware limits appear to be the main barrier

That direction fits Apple’s long-standing habit of tying software support to device capability rather than age alone. For iOS 27, the on-device processing required by Apple Intelligence and the need for stronger encryption are said to demand more RAM and a faster Neural Engine.

Instant Digital, a tech account known on Weibo, says devices below the Apple A14 Bionic chip will not be able to handle the system’s workload. Under that scenario, the iPhone 11 and iPhone SE 2 would be among the models most likely to lose access to the new operating system.

Siri is expected to change the most

One of the biggest rumored changes in iOS 27 is a redesigned Siri. The virtual assistant is said to be split into a standalone app powered by a new generation of AI.

Its appearance in Dynamic Island is also said to change, with a more interactive search field labeled “Search or Ask.” In addition, the next version of Siri is rumored to understand context from built-in apps such as Mail and Messages, which would make responses feel more personal.

AI may spread beyond voice features

Apple is also reportedly preparing a broader Visual Intelligence experience in iOS 27. One of the rumored uses is instant food nutrition detection through the camera.

That direction suggests Apple wants AI to become a central part of everyday use, not just a voice assistant feature. The focus appears to be on more practical and context-aware tools that fit routine tasks.

Connectivity may also get a major push

Beyond AI, iOS 27 is said to bring a significant upgrade to satellite connectivity. The update may enable high-speed 5G internet over satellite directly from the operating system.

If that feature arrives, users may be able to open Apple Maps or send document photos through messaging without a regular cellular connection. The rumor also says users would no longer need to point the phone toward the sky in the usual way associated with satellite use.

Support for iOS does not mean equal access to features

Even if the iPhone 12 and newer models can install iOS 27, not every feature is expected to be available on all supported devices. Some premium Apple Intelligence functions are reportedly still restricted to the iPhone 15 Pro and above.

That separation shows how software support and feature support are becoming increasingly different. A phone may receive the update while still missing some of the newest capabilities bundled with it.

The same discussion is also circulating for iPad, although the models affected have not been detailed further. Apple is still expected to prioritize hardware performance limits over device age when deciding support.

Apple is said to release the final public version of iOS 27 in September 2026 alongside the next iPhone launch. Until then, the list of devices that remain safe will continue to draw attention from users of older iPhone models.
