Samsung appears to be moving closer to launching a new wide-format foldable in India, after a device believed to be the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide surfaced on the BIS certification database. The listing is an important sign that the company’s official launch path in the market is already underway.
The appearance is drawing attention because the handset is being positioned as Samsung’s first passport-style foldable. With foldables expected to move toward wider designs in 2026, the device is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched launches in the category.
BIS listing points to an India debut
The device was reportedly spotted by tipster Sanju Choudhary on X under the model number SM-D647B. The BIS entry is dated 5 June 2026 and does not include technical specifications, but its presence suggests the product is being prepared for the Indian market.
BIS, or the Bureau of Indian Standards, handles standardization, marking, and quality certification for goods before they are sold in India. Smartphones that are officially launched in the country must pass through that process first.
That makes the listing a meaningful step for Samsung, since products that reach the BIS database are often seen as being close to launch. For Indian buyers following the foldable segment, it is another signal that the wait may not be much longer.
A wider foldable design is the main draw
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide name points to a different design direction from Samsung’s current Fold lineup. Instead of a modest refresh, the company is said to be preparing a wider folding format.
