Insta360 Luna Ultra Takes Aim at Osmo Pocket 4P, With a Detachable Screen and Optical Zoom

Author: Qoo Media

Insta360 has moved into premium handheld gimbal cameras with the Luna Ultra, a flagship model aimed squarely at high-end vloggers. The device stands out because it pairs a dual-camera setup with a detachable touchscreen, putting it in direct competition with devices such as the DJI Osmo Pocket 4P.

The new camera also carries extra weight thanks to its Leica collaboration, which strengthens its position in the upper tier of the market. For creators who want more flexibility from a pocket-sized camera, the combination of a large sensor, a telephoto lens, and a removable screen is the main draw.

Dual cameras expand framing options

The Luna Ultra uses a 1-inch main sensor with an f/1.8 aperture and a 20mm equivalent focal length. That setup is designed for wide shots, which are commonly used in vlogging and everyday recording.

Insta360 also included a telephoto camera with an f/2.0 aperture and a 60mm equivalent focal length. This second camera supports up to 3x optical zoom, 6x lossless zoom, and 12x digital zoom.

Together, the two cameras give the Luna Ultra a broader shooting range than many pocket gimbal cameras that rely on a single main lens. That approach makes it easier to switch from wide framing to tighter subject shots without needing to move the camera as much.

The detachable screen changes how it can be used

One of the most notable features is the 2-inch touchscreen that can be removed from the body. It can work as both a monitor and a remote control, allowing users to frame shots and start recording from up to 20 meters away in HD resolution.

That flexibility is especially useful for solo creators who often record themselves. The screen can also be used in portrait or landscape orientation, depending on whether the content is vertical or horizontal.

A detachable display opens up more use cases than a standard pocket camera. Users can place the camera in one position and monitor the image from another without staying behind the device the whole time.

Flagship video and photo specifications

For video, the Luna Ultra supports recording up to 8K at 30fps. It can also shoot 4K at up to 120fps and 4K slow-motion video at 240fps.

On the still-photo side, Insta360 says the camera can capture up to 37MP in UltraPhoto mode. It also supports panoramic photos at up to 200MP.

10-bit recording adds more room for color editing, while Dolby Vision and I-Log expand the camera’s workflow options. Those formats show that the Luna Ultra is not built only for casual use.

The combination of high resolution, strong frame-rate support, and richer video formats makes the device relevant for creators who want a compact tool for more serious production work.

Stabilization, audio, and battery life

As a gimbal camera, the Luna Ultra uses mechanical 3-axis stabilization. Insta360 also includes Deep Track 5.0 for subject tracking, which matters for solo shooting and moving scenes.

Audio is handled by a four-microphone array. That setup is meant to keep sound capture central to the vlogging package without requiring external accessories right away.

The camera is fitted with a 1,550mAh battery. Insta360 says it can last for up to four hours, and the device also supports fast charging.

That battery life places the Luna Ultra among devices that can handle a relatively long recording session on one charge. Fast charging adds some extra convenience for users who move quickly between shoots.

Storage, connectivity, colors, and price

Insta360 gives the Luna Ultra 47GB of internal storage. It also supports microSD cards up to 1TB for users who need more room, especially when recording 8K or high-frame-rate 4K video.

For connectivity, the main camera unit supports Wi-Fi 6. The detachable screen uses Wi-Fi 4, and the device also includes a USB Type-C port.

The Luna Ultra comes in Cosmic Black and Stellar White. The Stellar White version is listed at 235 grams.

Insta360 is selling the Luna Ultra for $769.99 through its official online store, Amazon, and other online retailers.

Its arrival marks another step in Insta360’s challenge to the handheld gimbal camera segment long associated with DJI’s Osmo Pocket line. With a 1-inch sensor, a telephoto camera, a detachable screen, and up to 8K recording, the premium pocket-camera race is becoming even more competitive.
