Apple used WWDC 2026 to put AI at the center of its next major software update, and iOS 27 is shaping up to be more than a visual refresh. The company says the new version will make Siri more personal while also delivering faster performance that users should notice in everyday use.
The biggest shift is Siri itself. Built on the latest Apple Intelligence integration, the assistant is moving beyond simple voice commands and toward a more contextual role that can understand what is on the screen, use personal context, and pull information from the internet to respond more relevantly.
Siri is becoming more context-aware
Apple described Siri as one of the biggest announcements at this year’s WWDC. The goal is to make the assistant feel more natural, more helpful, and more efficient when handling routine tasks across iPhone and iPad.
Apple is also preparing a dedicated Siri app that will open access to the newest AI capabilities more broadly. That move reinforces Siri’s position as a core part of the iOS 27 experience rather than a background feature.
The design changes are subtler, but they still matter. Apple refined the Liquid Glass language with a slider that lets users adjust transparency, while refraction effects have been made more consistent and contrast has been improved for a cleaner look.
Performance gains are aimed at daily use
Beyond AI and design, Apple is pushing improvements that are meant to be felt immediately. App launch times are said to be up to 30 percent faster, newly captured photos appear more quickly in the gallery, and AirDrop transfer speeds increase by up to 80 percent.
The company also says switching between Wi-Fi and cellular networks is smoother and more stable. Taken together, these changes are designed to make iPhone and iPad feel more responsive without changing how people use them.
Mail is getting a smarter search function that should make it easier to find messages, while VoiceOver gains the ability to provide more detailed image descriptions for accessibility users.
New tools for language, sharing, and iPad workflows
iOS 27 also adds subtitles with automatic sync and real-time translation support. That feature should make foreign-language video easier to follow for users who regularly watch content across languages.
Apple is also bringing full-resolution photo uploads to iCloud Shared Albums from Android and Windows devices. The addition addresses a common cross-platform pain point by preserving image quality when sharing.
On iPadOS 27, Apple is introducing a new tool that turns a collection of photos and videos into an automatic slideshow. The result includes transitions, background music, and export options that can be adjusted to fit the user’s needs.
iPad gets a stronger file and calendar layer
Apple is also adding natural-language support for creating and editing calendar events on iPadOS 27. That should make scheduling more practical, since users can enter requests in a simpler conversational way.
File handling is another area that gets a major boost. Apple says transfer speeds to external storage devices are now up to five times faster than on the previous generation, which should matter most to users who work with large files on iPad.
Not every feature will be available on every device. The more advanced Apple Intelligence capabilities require newer hardware, while many of the performance improvements and system refinements will remain available on supported iPhone and iPad models.
Apple has already released the developer beta, with the public beta set to arrive next month. The global release is expected at the end of 2026, with AI positioned as the main story across both iOS 27 and iPadOS 27.
