Apple is using iOS 27 to change the way the iPhone works day to day. The update puts AI at the center, with Siri rebuilt to do more than answer simple voice requests.
The biggest shift is a new Siri experience that feels closer to a modern chat-based assistant. It arrives inside a dedicated app, supports more natural conversation, and keeps earlier interactions available across devices.
Apple says the assistant is now better at understanding context and user intent. It can handle more complex requests and carry out actions across different apps with fewer instructions.
Search becomes an AI entry point
iOS 27 also adds a new system-level search experience powered by Siri. Instead of opening a browser or switching apps, users can ask questions directly from the built-in interface and get conversational answers, summaries, and faster access to what they need.
The gesture to reach it is straightforward. A swipe down from the middle of the screen opens the Siri-powered Search or Ask interface, while the left and right top corners still lead to Notification Centre and Control Centre.
Apple added new animations to make the transition into the AI search view clearer. The goal is to make system search feel less like a utility and more like a direct conversation with the device.
Apple Intelligence reaches deeper into the system
Apple Intelligence is being pushed further across iOS 27, with smarter writing help, contextual suggestions, and upgraded productivity features. Apple also introduced an Extensions framework that lets compatible third-party AI models connect with Siri.
That framework gives users more flexibility for certain tasks, since different AI services can be chosen when needed. It also signals that Apple wants Siri to become a more open hub for AI actions rather than a closed assistant.
Shortcuts is another major beneficiary. Users can now build shortcuts with natural language instead of assembling each action manually, and Apple says Apple Intelligence will create the shortcut automatically from the request.
An example given by Apple is a command to send a message to someone when leaving the office, including an estimated arrival time. That kind of automation is designed to reduce setup friction and make routine tasks easier to trigger.
Photos, Camera, and everyday apps get smarter tools
The Photos app receives new AI editing tools that can enhance images intelligently, expand image boundaries, reframe compositions, and make advanced adjustments with minimal user input. Image Playground is also updated, with support for high-quality images in styles including photorealism and the ability to modify results through description.
Camera becomes more flexible as well, letting users rearrange controls and prioritize the settings they use most often. Messages and Mail gain context-aware Suggestions that can launch quick actions, add calendar events, or help search for photos with a single tap.
Safari is becoming more organized through automatic tab grouping by topic. Apple is also adding Call Context, which can surface relevant information from other apps during a phone call to a business, such as a confirmation code found in Mail while speaking with an airline.
Visual tweaks and speed gains remain part of the package
Although AI is the main theme, Apple is still refining the Liquid Glass design language. iOS 27 includes a new slider for adjusting the look from a more frosted style to a clearer visual appearance.
App icons are being sharpened with more defined visual layers, giving the interface a cleaner and more detailed finish. Apple also claims major performance gains, including app launches up to 30% faster, new photos loading in the library up to 70% faster, and AirDrop transfers 80% faster.
Child safety tools are expanding
Apple is extending child safety protections as part of the release. In Setup Assistant, parents can now choose which system apps are allowed for a child from the start, while Time Allowances and cross-app Schedules add more control.
Communication Safety is also expanding to help protect children from viewing or sharing nudity in Messages, FaceTime, and other services. An Ask to Browse feature is included as well, requiring children to ask for permission before visiting a new website.
Apple says iOS 27 is available now as a developer beta, with a public beta coming next month. The stable release is scheduled for Fall 2026 alongside the iPhone 18 series and the iPhone Ultra foldable.
Apple says iPhone 11 and later models will receive the update. With Siri, system search, and Apple Intelligence all moving closer together, iOS 27 is shaping up as one of Apple’s most ambitious software releases in years.
