Apple is reportedly preparing a second-generation iPhone Air with a more practical camera setup and stronger battery life. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the model is expected to arrive in the spring of 2027 and could move beyond the ultra-thin-first formula of the original device.
The biggest change under discussion is the addition of a second rear camera. If the report proves accurate, the iPhone Air 2 would gain an ultrawide lens alongside the main sensor, giving the lineup a broader photography toolkit than the first-generation model.
That shift would matter in everyday use. An ultrawide camera usually makes it easier to capture landscapes, buildings, and group shots without having to step back, which could make the Air line feel less like a design experiment and more like a balanced mainstream option.
A sharper focus on daily use
Bloomberg says the information comes from people familiar with Apple’s product development. Internally, the device is said to be known as V62.
Beyond the camera upgrade, Apple is also said to be working on better battery endurance for the new model. The company may do that by using a larger battery, a more efficient chipset, or software optimization.
Those details are still not final, which suggests the device remains in development rather than in a fully locked public form. Even so, the direction is clear: Apple appears to want to keep the slim profile while improving the parts that matter most in everyday ownership.
Where iPhone Air 2 could fit in Apple’s schedule
Gurman says the iPhone Air 2 is expected to launch alongside the standard iPhone 18 in spring 2027. That would place the Air model in a different release rhythm from many of Apple’s better-known late-year iPhone launches.
The timing also suggests Apple may be spreading major product attention across multiple windows instead of concentrating everything into one event cycle. For the Air line, that could give the model more room to establish its own identity.
The first iPhone Air debuted in September 2025, so the next version would arrive after a relatively short but meaningful development window. If the timeline holds, Apple will be using that period to refine the formula rather than replace it completely.
Chipset upgrade could be a major part of the appeal
The same report says the iPhone Air 2 may be powered by the A20 Pro chip. That processor is also expected to debut in the iPhone 18 Pro this year, which would give the Air model a notably strong performance base.
A chip of that class could help explain why Apple may not need a dramatic redesign. Performance gains and improved efficiency often deliver a more noticeable upgrade than visual changes alone, especially in a device built around thinness and portability.
For now, there are still no confirmed details on battery size, camera resolution, or other hardware changes. The clearest signals are limited to the dual rear camera setup, improved battery life, and the possible use of the A20 Pro chip.
The iPhone Air 2 remains unannounced, but the early direction points to a less extreme and more versatile product than the first model. If Apple follows through on these changes, the next Air could be the version that gives the line a stronger reason to exist beyond being thin.
