Apple Watch Ultra 1 Is Left Behind by watchOS 27, Premium Status No Longer Enough

Apple’s watchOS 27 is drawing a clear line between older Apple Watch models and the devices that can handle the newest features. One of the most surprising names on the exclusion list is the first-generation Apple Watch Ultra, a model that was once positioned as a premium flagship.

The device launched in 2022 with a starting price of USD 799, but it will now be limited to basic functions, iPhone pairing, and security updates. For owners who expected a longer run at the top of Apple’s lineup, the shift is significant.

Feature access is now tied to processing power

Apple says the decision is not only about age. The company wants each software update to deliver the best possible performance, which means newer features are reserved for models with stronger hardware.

In comments shared with TechRadar, Apple Watch and Health Product Marketing Manager Cait Dooley said the company designs updates so they can run at their best. She also explained that the newest watchOS features require more processing power than earlier generations.

Which models miss full watchOS 27 support

The first-generation Apple Watch Ultra is not alone. Apple also excludes several older models from full support, even though some are still relatively recent by consumer standards.

Models without full watchOS 27 supportStatus
Apple Watch Series 8 and earlierNo full support
Apple Watch Ultra first generationNo full support
Apple Watch SE first generationNo full support
Apple Watch SE second generationNo full support

These devices can still be used normally, but they will not receive the full set of new features introduced with watchOS 27. That includes Apple’s AI-based Siri improvements and the new tap gesture feature.

Newer watches keep the full experience

Apple says the full watchOS 27 experience is reserved for newer models, especially devices with the latest chips. The company specifically points to Apple Watch Series 9 and later, Apple Watch Ultra 2 and later, and Apple Watch SE 3.

Those devices will receive the complete set of new functions without the restrictions affecting older watches. Apple is also signaling that premium pricing alone no longer guarantees access to every new capability.

What older owners still receive

Apple is not ending support entirely for affected watches. The models left out of full feature access will still pair with newer iPhones and continue to receive security updates.

That means core use remains intact, even if the newest watchOS features are out of reach. For many users, the practical difference will be a narrower experience rather than a dead end.

watchOS 27 is scheduled to arrive in September 2026 alongside iOS 27 and Apple’s other upcoming operating system releases.
