Apple is reportedly preparing a second-generation iPhone Air that could arrive on an unusual timeline, with a possible spring 2027 launch alongside the standard iPhone 18.
The most important change is not expected to be a dramatic redesign. Instead, the company appears to be targeting the two complaints that have followed the first model most closely: the camera and battery life.
A more practical update, not a full reinvention
The current iPhone Air uses a single rear camera, a choice that keeps the device visually clean and minimal but also limits flexibility for everyday shooting.
Leaks suggest Apple may add an ultrawide sensor to the next model, which would make the phone more useful for landscape shots, group photos, and wider framing.
Some reports also say Apple has tested prototypes with two rear cameras. Even so, the overall design is expected to stay close to the existing formula rather than shift into a radically different shape.
Battery life is also in focus
Battery endurance is the other area under scrutiny, which is not surprising for an especially thin phone. Slim designs often leave less room for a larger battery, so efficiency becomes just as important as capacity.
It is still unclear whether Apple will increase the battery size directly or rely more heavily on better power management. The direction, however, points toward a meaningful improvement over the current model.
A20 chip could be the efficiency lever
One of the clearest clues is the chip rumored for the device. The iPhone Air 2 is said to have a chance of using Apple’s A20 chip.
That chip is expected to be built on a newer manufacturing process, which typically helps improve power efficiency. If that proves accurate, it could extend battery life without forcing major changes to the thin chassis.
This approach fits the Air line’s identity. Apple seems determined to preserve the lightweight, slim character of the product while trimming the compromises that made the first version harder to recommend.
A different launch rhythm may be coming
The reported launch window is also notable because it may reflect a broader change in Apple’s iPhone strategy. Several reports suggest the company is considering a two-stage release schedule for future models.
In that scenario, the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and Apple’s first foldable iPhone could arrive first at the end of 2026. The standard iPhone 18 and iPhone Air 2 would then follow about six months later, in spring 2027.
If that happens, it would mark one of the biggest shifts in Apple’s iPhone launch pattern in years. The company has long centered its phones around a single major event, so splitting the lineup would signal a new approach.
For now, there is still no official confirmation from Apple about the device or its release schedule. Even so, the rumors suggest the Air line remains important in Apple’s long-term iPhone plans.
That makes the second-generation model more than a simple follow-up. It appears to be aimed at fixing the issues that mattered most, while keeping the thin design that defines the series.
