WhatsApp Tests One-View Texts on iPhone, Privacy Gets a Sharper Edge

WhatsApp is testing a new layer of privacy for iPhone users by bringing the “view once” feature to text messages. The update is designed to make a message disappear after it has been opened once by the recipient.

The move extends a feature that many users already know from photos, videos, and voice notes. For sensitive conversations, the idea is straightforward: send a text that should not remain in the chat longer than necessary.

A more controlled way to send private messages

The sending process is meant to stay simple. Users can press and hold the send button, then choose the “send as view once” option before the message is delivered.

Once the message is opened and read, it disappears from the conversation window. That makes it different from ordinary chat messages, which remain visible until they are deleted.

From Android testing to iPhone testing

WhatsApp had already been testing a similar feature on Android in early June 2026. Its arrival in iPhone testing shows the company is developing the function across platforms rather than focusing on a single operating system.

The wider rollout effort also reflects WhatsApp’s growing emphasis on user privacy controls. In a fast-moving messaging environment, users get another option for limiting how long a message stays accessible.

Works in private chats and groups

The text-based view once option is expected to work in both one-on-one chats and group chats. It will not be available in WhatsApp Channels, which means the feature remains limited to specific conversation types.

That limitation helps define the feature’s role more clearly. It is meant for private or semi-private exchanges, while channels remain outside its scope.

Different from disappearing messages

This feature is not the same as disappearing messages, which were also revealed earlier in May. Disappearing messages let users set a time limit before a message is removed automatically.

View once is stricter because the message vanishes immediately after one open. That gives senders more precise control over how long their words remain in the chat.

For now, the text view once feature is still in internal testing. It is not yet available to public beta users, so the timing of any wider release remains dependent on WhatsApp’s testing progress.
