Redmi is pushing the K90 Ultra into a rare corner of the smartphone market: a flagship phone that treats cooling as seriously as its chipset. Instead of relying only on raw peak performance, the device adds an internal active fan to help maintain speed during long gaming or heavy workloads.

Snapdragon 8 Elite sits at the center

Within the K90 lineup, Redmi is splitting its strategy by chipset. The K90 Max is expected to use MediaTek’s Dimensity 9500, while the K90 Ultra is built around Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite.

That distinction matters because many users in China still lean toward Snapdragon for gaming stability, GPU behavior, and network support. Others prefer MediaTek for its efficiency and potentially lower cost.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite itself is Qualcomm’s latest flagship-class platform for premium devices. It is built on a 3nm process and combines Oryon CPU cores, a new Adreno GPU, and a 45 TOPS AI engine.

Active cooling is the headline feature

The most unusual part of the K90 Ultra is not the chipset, but the thermal system wrapped around it. The built-in active fan places the phone closer to gaming devices such as ASUS ROG Phone and Lenovo Legion models than to typical mainstream flagships.

Redmi is treating thermal management as a core specification rather than an afterthought. The goal is to keep CPU and GPU performance stable during extended gaming sessions, 4K video rendering, and other sustained workloads.

According to the reported charging estimate, the battery can move from empty to full in about 35 to 40 minutes. For users who spend long periods away from a charger, that refill time adds practical value to the large capacity.

There is a clear cost to packing in a large battery, active cooling, and a complex thermal layout. The phone is likely to end up thicker and heavier than more minimalist flagships.

Redmi seems willing to accept that compromise in exchange for sustained performance. As a result, the K90 Ultra is better suited to users who value endurance, consistent power, and long-use comfort over compact design.

Within the broader K90 family, the device also serves a specific role. Even though both models include active cooling, the K90 Ultra is positioned for Qualcomm fans, while the K90 Max is aimed at buyers who prefer MediaTek.

Launch plans still point to China first

The K90 Ultra is expected to debut in China between June and July 2026. A formal global release is unlikely for now, although import channels or a possible rebrand could still bring it to other markets later.

There is also mention of a limited global firmware path through MIUI updates, but the main focus remains the Chinese market. That is where Redmi appears ready to test a formula built around sustained performance instead of minimalist design.
