vivo X Fold 6 is shaping up to be one of the most significant changes in the company’s foldable lineup. For the first time, vivo is expected to move away from Qualcomm and use MediaTek Dimensity 9500 Super Edition as its main chipset.
That shift signals more than a routine yearly update. It suggests vivo wants to prove that a premium foldable can still look and feel flagship-level without relying on Snapdragon.
A New Direction After Years With Qualcomm
Since the first X Fold, vivo has consistently used Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon chips. The original X Fold came with Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, X Fold2 used Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, X Fold3 arrived with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, and X Fold5 shipped with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.
X Fold 6 breaks that pattern with a special Dimensity 9500 Super Edition variant. vivo says the chip delivers up to 111% higher NPU performance and 56% lower AI power consumption than the standard version.
According to Han Boxiao, vivo’s product manager, the change is also tied to budget planning. With Qualcomm licensing and component costs remaining high, the company can redirect more of its spending to areas that matter more in a foldable phone.
More Attention on the Hinge, Glass, and Camera System
Those priority areas reportedly include an ultra-durable hinge mechanism, a new generation of foldable screen protection glass, and a premium camera system backed by Zeiss. The approach shows vivo is aiming to improve the experience of using the phone, not just its benchmark numbers.
It also reflects stronger confidence in the MediaTek ecosystem. Thermal efficiency and AI capability matter especially for a foldable that is often used for heavy multitasking.
200MP Camera Becomes the Main Attraction
One of the biggest highlights of X Fold 6 is its main camera. vivo is equipping the device with a Samsung 200MP HPB sensor measuring 1/1.4 inches with an f/1.68 aperture.
The sensor supports 16-in-1 pixel binning to produce 12.5MP photos with better light handling in low-light conditions. On the telephoto side, vivo uses a 50MP Sony LYT-602 in a Zeiss APO periscope setup designed to correct chromatic aberration optically.
Both cameras are paired with CIPA 4.5-stop stabilization. That combination makes X Fold 6 look serious about image quality rather than just chasing high resolution.
Optical Support Rarely Seen on Foldables
vivo is also making X Fold 6 compatible with physical optical accessories from the X200 Ultra line. Supported accessories include the Zeiss 200mm Teleconverter G2 and the Teleconverter 2.35x.
That kind of support is uncommon, even among non-folding flagships. It strengthens the position of X Fold 6 as a device that wants to enter more serious mobile photography territory.
Large, Bright, and More Work-Ready Displays
On the front, X Fold 6 is said to use an 8.02-inch Samsung M14 foldable panel. The display reportedly offers a 5,000-nit peak brightness, adaptive refresh rate up to 120Hz, and a more scratch-resistant UTG layer.
The outer display is said to measure 6.51 inches, although that detail remains a rumor. If accurate, it would make daily use easier without forcing users to open the phone all the time.
Big Battery and Software Built for Multitasking
X Fold 6 is also expected to carry a 6,900mAh battery. If confirmed, that would make it one of the largest-battery foldables on the market, thanks to a dual-cell design that follows the foldable form factor.
For software, vivo is preparing OriginOS 6 Fold. The system brings four-window multitasking, drag-and-drop between apps, pinned floating windows, and AI integration for task automation.
China First, Global Rollout Still Unclear
vivo has so far only confirmed the launch of X Fold 6 in China. Pricing has not been announced, but if it follows X Fold5, which was priced at around Rp20 million, the new model could land in the Rp21–23 million range.
For global markets, availability is still uncertain in the near term. Historically, vivo has needed 3–6 months to bring the X Fold series to Europe or Southeast Asia, and in some cases the devices never arrive in the United States.
