Apple’s next iPhone Air model is being watched closely because the strongest rumor so far points to a change many users have wanted from the start: a second rear camera. If the report proves accurate, the iPhone Air 2 could move from a minimalist camera setup to a more versatile dual-lens system.
The device is still said to be in prototype development, but Bloomberg reports that Apple is testing a rear ultra-wide camera alongside the wide lens. That would give the phone a setup closer to more conventional iPhone models while keeping the Air line’s thinner identity intact.
A response to a familiar complaint
The original iPhone Air relied on a single 48MP rear camera, supported by 2x optical zoom, and an 18MP front camera. For a phone positioned as a lighter and more affordable iPhone option, the single rear camera became one of the clearest points of criticism.
According to Bloomberg, that camera limitation was a frequent complaint among customers. Adding an ultra-wide lens would directly address that weakness and make the iPhone Air 2 more practical for users who want wider framing for landscapes, group shots, and everyday shooting.
There are still important unknowns. The lens size and final hardware details have not been confirmed, so the exact camera performance of the device remains uncertain.
Battery improvements are also being considered
Camera changes are not the only rumored upgrade. The iPhone Air 2 is also expected to receive some form of battery improvement, although Apple has not clarified whether that means a larger cell or better efficiency.
As 9to5Mac noted on Wednesday, June 17, the Air’s slim design may make a larger battery difficult to fit without compromising the form factor. That leaves efficiency gains as another possible route Apple could take.
Spring 2027 may be the target window
If the timeline holds, the iPhone Air 2 could arrive in spring 2027. Bloomberg says it would launch alongside the standard iPhone 18, as Apple continues shifting the iPhone 18 series toward a staggered release schedule.
Under that plan, the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Fold are expected in fall 2026. The standard iPhone 18, the iPhone 18e, and the iPhone Air 2 would then follow in spring 2027.
Where the iPhone Air line stands now
The current iPhone Air debuted in September 2025 with the iPhone 17 series and was positioned as a more affordable iPhone choice. That positioning makes any upgrade to camera quality or battery life especially important, since value-focused users are more sensitive to practical trade-offs.
If the rumors hold, the iPhone Air 2 may not be a dramatic reinvention, but it would be a meaningful correction. A second rear camera and improved endurance would answer the most obvious frustrations with the first model while keeping the Air concept alive.
