Flagship smartphone pricing may be heading higher again, and the latest chatter centers on MediaTek’s Dimensity 9600 Pro. The chip is said to cost about $216 per unit, a noticeable jump from the Dimensity 9500 range of $180 to $200.
That matters because chipset costs often flow into the final price of premium phones. If the numbers prove accurate, next year’s flagship models could become even harder to launch at a low entry price.
Why the price is moving up
The reported increase is being linked to what supply-chain talk describes as a “structural recovery.” In practical terms, that points to firmer demand for new phones and a broader improvement in certain developing markets.
The same pattern is also said to be appearing in other component categories. Realtek, for example, is reportedly raising prices by around 10% on some of its product lines.
What the Dimensity 9600 Pro is expected to bring
The Dimensity 9600 series is rumored to arrive in two versions, a standard model and a Pro model. The Pro variant is drawing the most attention because it is expected to combine a more advanced manufacturing process with faster memory support.

The move to a 2nm process is one of the main reasons the price is expected to climb. It should deliver better efficiency and stronger peak performance, but it also increases wafer costs.
On the performance side, the Pro chip is said to use an octa-core 2+3+3 CPU setup. Two prime cores are reportedly ARM Cortex C2-Ultra parts clocked near 5GHz, supported by three C2-Premium cores and three C2-Pro cores.
That combination is expected to improve both single-core and multi-core results. It is also why the chip is already being discussed as a serious rival to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro.
In some benchmark scenarios, the Dimensity 9600 Pro is even said to have the potential to pressure Apple’s A-series lineup. That remains speculation for now, however, since the chip has not been formally announced.
More than just a CPU upgrade
Other technical details are also starting to surface. The Dimensity 9600 Pro is said to support UFS 5.0 storage and to include an upgraded Arm “Magni” GPU.
Its AI capabilities are also expected to improve compared with the previous generation. Taken together, those changes suggest MediaTek is preparing a broader platform upgrade rather than a simple speed bump.
The standard model may still have a role for brands that want better cost balance. With N2 manufacturing and LPDDR5X memory, it could offer a more restrained path for vendors trying to keep device prices in check.
MediaTek is also said to be strengthening its position in the premium segment, especially among Chinese brands such as Oppo and Vivo. That makes the Dimensity 9600 series an important part of the next flagship cycle.
The series is expected to appear in phones launching around September 2026. That timing places it squarely in the period when flagship competition typically intensifies and pricing trends begin to take shape.
