The appeal is simple: the specifications are strong enough for everyday needs and for users moving up from lower-end devices.
“Hp Rp5 jutaan cukup diminati, mengingat spesifikasinya cukup mumpuni, dari segi kamera, penyimpanan, teknologi AI serta performance” said Jimmy, Manager of Wilma Cell at ITC Roxy Mas, Central Jakarta.
His remarks reflect a broader shift in buying behavior, where consumers increasingly weigh long-term usefulness over the lowest upfront cost. That trend has helped keep the midrange segment relevant even as the overall market slows.
Counterpoint Sees a Slower Market, but Premium Demand Stays Firm
Counterpoint Research said Indonesia’s smartphone market has softened because of rising component costs. Smartphone shipments in Indonesia fell 9 percent year on year in the first quarter of 2026.
The decline was driven by a global increase in memory component prices, which pushed manufacturers to raise retail prices. Some consumers responded by delaying purchases altogether.
Even so, premiumization has continued. Consumers who do upgrade are more likely to choose higher-spec devices with a longer usable life, which has kept demand in the midrange and premium tiers relatively stable.
AI and Camera Features Set the Rp5 Million Tier Apart
In this price band, many vendors now offer AMOLED displays with high refresh rates, upper-midrange chipsets, high-resolution cameras, fast charging, and AI features. The result is a category that feels increasingly close to premium phones without reaching flagship pricing.

Counterpoint Research also noted that smartphone replacement cycles are stretching out. Where many users once upgraded every two to three years, more people are now keeping their phones longer before buying a new one.
That change explains why buyers tend to choose stronger specifications when they finally upgrade. They want a device that remains relevant for several years, and the Rp5 million class is often seen as the best compromise between price and capability.
The segment is also attractive for people who use their phones for work, content creation, gaming, or generative AI tools. In that sense, the market is not just competing on price, but on how much practical value each device can deliver over time.
