Callback 8020 Gets a Day-One Price Cut, But the $50 Code Lasts Only Today

Commodore has opened pre-orders for the Callback 8020 with an immediate incentive aimed at early buyers. Shoppers who use the code CHICKENLIPS at checkout can take an extra $50 off, but only on 30 June until 11:59 pm PDT.

The discount comes on top of a lower pre-order price that is already set at $399. That means the foldable phone enters the market with a more aggressive opening offer than the one initially announced.

A faster response to buyer pushback

The revised pricing follows an earlier $100 cut after the device’s debut sparked criticism over its original price. Commodore said the new $399 figure was reached with help from partners as it worked to address customer concerns.

The company also acknowledged that adjusting pricing was not simple because a smartphone depends on many components and design decisions. Even so, the latest move suggests Commodore is determined to make the Callback 8020 easier to justify from the first day of pre-orders.

What buyers get at $399

At the base price, the Callback 8020 is offered in BASIC Beige, ProtoPET White, SX Silver, and Starlight Edition. Commodore has also separated some extras into add-on bundles rather than folding everything into the entry price.

The company says the bundle approach gives customers more flexibility at checkout. It also keeps the entry price lower for buyers who only want the core device.

Positioned as a phone built to reduce distraction

Commodore describes the Callback 8020 as a “smart flip phone designed for modern life, not modern distractions.” The message is clear: this is being sold as more than a retro-style foldable.

The company leans into Y2K-inspired design, but it pairs that nostalgia with a direct criticism of modern smartphone behavior. CEO and president Peri Fractric said the modern world is full of distractions and that one of the most damaging comes from social media.

Fractric added that many phones are designed to keep people looking down, while the Callback is meant to help users “look up again.” That positioning gives the device a lifestyle angle that goes beyond hardware.

Privacy and demand are part of the pitch

Privacy is another message Commodore continues to push around the Callback 8020. Fractric said the interest in the device reflects growing frustration with phones and devices he described as “data-stealing.”

Before pre-orders began, Commodore said it had already gathered 100,000 people on a waiting list in just two weeks. That early demand helps explain why the company is using a short-lived launch coupon to drive day-one orders.

Commodore also said the price adjustment was influenced by privacy concerns, the current global RAM situation, and accessories. By separating add-ons from the base package, the company appears to be balancing affordability with optional extras.

For shoppers who were already interested in a distraction-light flip phone, the combination of a lower starting price and a one-day coupon makes the Callback 8020 a much more attention-grabbing preorder than its first reveal suggested. The CHICKENLIPS code remains the key detail for anyone hoping to save an extra $50 on launch day.
