Apple’s Abandoned Car Project Left Behind a Fast AI Chip Advantage

Apple’s long-canceled autonomous car program may never reach the road, but it helped shape one of the company’s most important technical advantages. The work behind that project became part of the foundation for Apple’s Neural Engine, which now powers AI tasks across its devices.

That shift matters because Apple was already designing for heavy on-device processing long before AI became a mainstream feature battle. According to reporting cited by The Verge, the company’s approach inside the car effort focused on local intelligence rather than relying heavily on the cloud.

From an unfinished car to a core chip strategy

Tech journalist Mark Gurman said in his latest Power On newsletter that the dedicated car processor never reached completion. Even so, the development work ultimately helped create the Neural Engine, which has since become central to Apple’s local AI processing.

The Neural Engine first appeared in iPhone X through the A11 Bionic chip. At that stage, it was used for features that depended heavily on visual computation, including Face ID, Animoji, and Augmented Reality.

Apple later expanded the Neural Engine to its desktop and laptop products through the M-series chip family. That move pushed local AI processing beyond the iPhone and into the company’s broader hardware ecosystem.

Hardware strength is becoming Apple’s AI message

Apple’s software AI offerings have often been seen as trailing rivals, but its hardware story remains a major strength. Local processing also supports Apple’s privacy message, since less personal data needs to be sent to the cloud.

Looking ahead, Apple appears ready to make AI hardware an even bigger part of its chip roadmap. Gurman reported that the company is said to be skipping Pro, Max, and Ultra variants for the upcoming M6 chip.

Instead, Apple is reportedly accelerating the M7 chip, which is expected in the first half of 2027. The Neural Engine inside that chip is said to receive a very significant upgrade.

At the top end, the rumored M7 Ultra is being prepared as the foundation for a new Apple server line. It is said to be supported by as much as 1.5 TB of RAM, underscoring Apple’s ambition to expand its in-house chips beyond consumer devices.

What failed to become a self-driving car has instead become a lasting AI asset. Apple’s abandoned mobility project now stands as an unexpectedly important source of the chip power behind many of its smartest devices.
