A Cover Display Could Redefine Huawei Mate XT2’s Foldable Three-Panel Design

A separate cover display may be one of the most consequential changes in Huawei’s next tri-fold device. Patent images linked to the Huawei Mate XT2 show an outer screen on the right panel, while the large flexible display appears to fold inward.

That arrangement would mark a departure from the Z-shaped folding approach used by the Huawei Mate XT and Mate XTs. It could give the device a dedicated external interface when its main internal screen is not unfolded.

A Different Role for Each Panel

The patent illustrations shared by leaker Ice Universe on X depict three primary panels with a distinct closing sequence. The left panel appears to fold inward first, followed by the right panel.

The right section is shown carrying the cover display, while the central section contains a circular camera module. This places the camera assembly between the first-folding left panel and the outer-screen panel.

Keeping the flexible panel inside when folded appears to be the central idea behind the design. The patent suggests Huawei is reconsidering not only the direction of the folds, but also how the device presents itself when closed.

The illustrations have been compared visually with the Samsung Galaxy Z Trifold. However, the mechanism shown in Huawei’s patent is said to operate differently from Samsung’s device.

Patent Images Are Not a Product Announcement

GSMArena connected the patent design to the Huawei Mate XT2, but Huawei has not announced the handset. Patent documents can indicate a design direction without confirming that every visible element will reach a retail model.

That uncertainty also applies to the exact implementation of the hinges and panels. The available material supports the possibility of an inward-folding design, not a final specification sheet.

Even so, the cover display stands out because it would keep an independent screen available on the outside. The large flexible display could remain folded away until users need a more expansive workspace.

Hardware Rumours Add to the Picture

Separate rumours indicate that the Mate XT2 could use the Kirin 9050 Pro chipset. The device is also said to carry a battery with a capacity above 6,000mAh.

For photography, the handset may feature three rear cameras in a configuration expected to resemble the Huawei Mate X7. Specific camera sensor details have not been disclosed.

A rumour circulating in April suggested Huawei could introduce the Mate XT2 in October. There has been no official confirmation of that timing.

If the patent concept becomes the final product, the Mate XT2 would represent more than an internal hardware update. Its most visible change would be a new three-panel layout built around an inward-folding main display and a separate cover screen.
