Samsung is positioning the 2TB Samsung 990 as a high-speed storage option for users who need substantial game and project capacity without moving directly to the company’s Pro range. The drive delivers sequential read speeds of up to 7,250MB/s and is said to hold roughly 30 AAA games averaging 64GB each.
That capacity is paired with stronger random performance than the 1TB version. The 2TB model reaches up to 850K random read IOPS and 1,200K random write IOPS, figures that matter when a system handles many small files, launches applications, or loads game assets at once.
Samsung 990 is built in the M.2 2280 form factor and uses a PCIe 4.0 x4 interface with the NVMe 2.0 protocol. It is intended for desktop and laptop systems that support an M.2 slot.
Two Capacities, Different Peak Read Speeds
The range includes 1TB and 2TB options, both using Samsung’s V-NAND memory and an in-house controller. While their maximum sequential write speed is identical, the larger drive holds an advantage in sequential reads and random operations.
| Capacity | Sequential Read | Sequential Write | Random Performance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1TB | Up to 7,150MB/s | Up to 6,450MB/s | 700K read, 1,100K write IOPS |
| 2TB | Up to 7,250MB/s | Up to 6,450MB/s | 850K read, 1,200K write IOPS |
The 1TB version is rated for 400TBW, while the 2TB model carries an 800TBW rating. TBW, or terabytes written, indicates the total amount of data that can be written to an SSD during its rated lifespan.
According to Gizmochina, Samsung describes the drive as suitable for gaming, content creation, and everyday PC workloads. Its positioning is notable because Samsung presents it as a more affordable PCIe 4.0 alternative to its premium SSD lineup.
Efficiency Claim Compared With Samsung 990 Pro
Samsung also highlights power efficiency as a key part of the Samsung 990 proposition. The company claims up to 38 percent higher efficiency than the Samsung 990 Pro while maintaining high storage performance.
The claim may be relevant to users seeking fast storage while keeping an eye on device power demands. Samsung did not provide specific power-consumption figures for each capacity in the launch information.
Drive management is handled through Samsung Magician, which supports data migration, health monitoring, performance optimization, and firmware updates. This gives users a single utility for maintaining the SSD after installation.
Encryption and India Availability
For data protection, the drive supports AES 256-bit full-disk encryption, TCG/Opal V2.0, and IEEE1667 Encrypted Drive. These features extend its appeal to both personal and professional users who require storage security.
In India, the 1TB Samsung 990 is priced at Rs 25,649, while the 2TB version is listed at Rs 50,349. Both models are scheduled to become available from the last week of July 2026 and include a three-year limited warranty.
