Apple’s next Pro iPhones may receive a focused camera upgrade rather than a complete overhaul. Leaked diagnostic information points to a variable aperture system for the main cameras of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
The feature would mark a notable departure from earlier Pro iPhone main cameras. At the same time, the available information suggests that several other camera components may remain unchanged from the previous Pro generation.
A Targeted Upgrade for Two Pro Models
The diagnostic log identifies the same main-camera direction for both upcoming devices. Each model is said to use a variable aperture alongside a Sony IMX905 main sensor with 1.22μm pixels.
| Model | Main Camera Detail | Named Sensor |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 18 Pro | Variable aperture | Sony IMX905, 1.22μm pixels |
| iPhone 18 Pro Max | Variable aperture | Sony IMX905, 1.22μm pixels |
The 1.22μm pixel size matches the pixel size listed for the preceding model. That similarity raises the possibility that the new sensor could be very close to the main-camera sensor used by the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max.
The reported addition of a variable aperture is therefore the clearest difference in the leak. No details have emerged about the aperture range or how the system would operate in everyday photography.
Other Camera Hardware May Stay in Place
The telephoto and ultrawide cameras are reportedly set to retain the configuration used in the prior Pro generation. The same report also indicates that the LiDAR receiver and front-facing camera may not change.
This would make the main camera the central hardware distinction between the new models and their predecessors. The leak does not indicate a broad redesign of every part of the camera system.
According to GSMArena, the information surfaced in diagnostic logs found among internal Tata Electronics documents. Tata Electronics, an Apple partner in India, was reportedly targeted in a ransomware attack last month.
The documents have not been confirmed by Apple, and the company has not announced camera specifications for the upcoming phones. As a result, the details should be treated as an unverified leak rather than final product information.
September Debut Is Expected
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to be introduced in September alongside the iPhone Ultra. Apple has not confirmed that launch lineup or provided official timing for the devices.
The two Pro models are also expected to cost more than their predecessors. Their prices could rise by as much as $200 because of an ongoing memory chip shortage and higher component costs.
For now, the variable aperture stands out as the most consequential camera claim in the leaked material. Whether it reaches the final products, and how Apple intends to implement it, remains unknown until the company reveals the phones.
